If anyone has given up the desktop PC for a laptop PC then can you say how that's working out?
TIA
Better late than never.
I love building desktops. But in Feb I bought this ASUS with the i7 intel processor and I barely use the desktop anymore.
I’m feet up in my recliner right now.
Ummmm. QSL cards papering the walls.... that might be a clue....

Is why God made 1U horsey blade servers and the X11 mafia created remote screens.
I do all the heavy lifting on remote servers with ssh -X i.p.a.d.d.r.e::0(insert IPv6 stuff as required for your OS) and the display on the laptop in front of me. Much easier when you own the network, but do-able, in most situations.

>> *Vanity* Anyone using a laptop as a desktop replacement?
For at least 10 years. An unnecessarily expensive alternative to an equally powered station if mobility isn’t a requirement.
I have a box of 8" SSSD 128k floppies that might interest you. Dbase 1.0, Wordstar are extra, but it comes with CP/M and utilities like pip.
If you don't move forward, you will die in your tracks.

Does nobody do remote processing on dedicated servers anymore? With just the display going to the laptop?
Or is everyone running crippled with MSware or MACs?
No wonder the Chinese are winning.

My wife has been using her Toshiba Qosmio X505-880 i7 quad core laptop for a year, no problems yet.
Has a SSD C drive and a 500GB secondary hard drive.
I call it an in house desktop replacement.
18.5 inch screen and fairly heavy for everyday carry around, but great for in house carry around.
Will be building a new desktop for myself where I can cool the heck out of it and also have an input air filter. It will be a faster and probably more dependable machine in the long run for half the money.
It’s not as convenient but its been working out for me since my desktop crashed and I haven’t gotten around to fixing it.
Pro III, Alpha 87, Mosley Pro67C@60’ on motorized crank up. Heavily involved in Emergency Coms. 335 countries on the wall. 337 worked. Need 7O and P5.
My primary computer is a 10’ Acer Aspire. Works great.
but the most important thing for me is GET A LIGHTED KEYBOARD~!!!
I wish all of them would have this
If you need sound out of your notebook check out USB-powered speakers; they are cheap and quite effective.
I use my Toshiba laptop all the time even though I have a desktop. I’ll never buy another Toshiba. Motherboard is going bad after only 15 months. Toshiba couldn’t give a crap. My next laptop will be a ZT Systems like my desktop. Made in America!
Yep. I’ve gone with an Asus Eee PC netbook as my regular computer. Very handy, can take anywhere, also much more rugged than a regular laptop.
I’ve narrow fingers so don’t mind the slightly reduced keyboard. Still once in a while I come across a web site that doesn’t scale quite right with a popup, but the advantages outweigh that inconvenience for me.
I've also added a Bluetooth mouse for when the touchpad just doesn't cut it.

I do that several ways on my tablet. While the anytime anywhere convenience is amazing, the usability and response time sucks.
Sweet.
It is sweet but I'm too cheap practical to pay $1,200. No matter how high-end you go there is a higher-end within a year's time.
I use cell phones rarely and only when I have to be in immediate contact with someone at a distance but will not carry one around. When I am out of touch I want to be out of touch. Laptops are something you have to carry with you. I don’t carry a purse, either. Things are a bit too modern when you have to carry around a lot of equipment and supplies just to exist.
