NBC: 'Puritanical' Americans Must Become 'Anesthetized' to Sex Scandals
Media Research Center ^ | 6/9/11 | Kyle Drennan

Posted on 06/09/2011 3:41:02 PM PDT by markomalley

Appearing on Tuesday's NBC Today, advertising executive Donny Deutsch and psychotherapist Robi Ludwig both agreed that the American people should not stop being "shocked" by political sex scandals. Deutsch declared: "...we have to stop being shocked and amazed....when men who are conquerors by nature also chase women....we as a society have got to become a little more anesthetized to this."

Moments later, as Duetsch one again proclaimed, "Let's stop being shocked at this stuff!," Ludwig blamed American moral values for the attention the scandal received: "We're a very puritanical country and so we're a little bit sexually repressed. So on the one hand we like hearing stories about sex, but we want certain things from our leaders that maybe is not realistic and maybe that's the sad part."

While Duestch and Ludwig certainly thought Weiner's actions were wrong, they seemed more concerned with the negative public reaction to the Congressman's lewd behavior.

Anchor Natalie Morales wondered if Weiner could "survive this politically?" Deutsch seemed to suggest an eventual comeback: "Always when you're in the minute, 'It's over, it's over, it's over, it's over,' you know?" Morales observed: "Well, [former New Governor Eliot] Spitzer eventually had to resign with all the pressure." Deutsch countered: "Well, now Spitzer's got a big television show on CNN. Who would have thought that?" Morales conceded: "Talk about a comeback in a way."

Here is a full transcript of the June 7 segment:

He’s trying to divert our attention from Weiner’s bigger issue: He lied about it, and didn’t admit it until it was obvious that he’d been caught. Similar to Slick Willie.

“We’re a very puritanical country...”

We’re puritanical?

One would never know it from the magazine covers displayed at shopping-market check-out stands.

And if I received e-mail identical to what Congressman Weiner sent out, I would sue the bastard. It’s called harassment, and it is illegal.

I doubt anyone would have given a RATS @$$ (except maybe his wife) if he hadn’t spent the weekend going on every TV show to lie through his teeth while suggesting a crime (hacking) had occured. As usual, the coverup is infinitely worse than the crime (or non crime in Weiner’s case).

Being Liberals they are completely unconcerned that Weiner lied from the beginning. They are more concerned about the sex part themselves.

Though if this doesn’t bother them, I guess some guy walking down the street flashing people must be A-OK in their book too.

Duetsch one again proclaimed, "Let's stop being shocked at this stuff!,"

Yeah! Why be shocked? All sex is OK! Sex out of wedlock, adultery, sex with people of the same sex, sex with 4 year olds, sex with goats, sex with everyone and everything! Sex sex sex! It is all OK! /HEAVY SARC

"...we have to stop being shocked and amazed....when men who are conquerors by nature also chase women."

In Weiner's case, it's not about "chasing women." It's about snapping photos of his junk and sending them in cyberspace to very young women whom he didn't even know, thus placing himself in a position to be blackmailed. The negative reaction to Weiner's idiocy, irresponsibility, and vileness has nothing to do with puritanism or prudishness.

>>>>>we have to stop being shocked and amazed....

I doubt most Americans think that way. Conservatives surely aren't "shocked and amazed". We just think elected officials should live by a proper set of standards and stop acting like juvenile jackasses on the public dole.

Donny Deutsch and Robi Ludwig offer ideological musings which are nothing more than... '60`s counter culture claptrap... liberal mumbo jumbo... leftist psychobabble... good time rock-n-roll... pure crappola!

Yup, we need to become as Anesthetized as France, where they let DSK run wild.

Dear Johnny Duetch:

What I want is for a person who runs for politcal office to tell the truth. He ran for a position of public trust. When questioned about his activities, he should tell the truth. When he lies, he breaks the trust.

A Voter.

Perhaps we wouldn’t be so puritanical if the Leftists would let boys be boys.

I wonder if Donnie Douche would be so forgiving if the Congressman had been a Republican...or even worse, a COMMON man?

Tell that to his bride of less than a year, who is carrying his child. Unless she’s fine with all that, Donny Douche is wrong.

While I am fascinated by the influence of Puritans on the building of the American character, I fail to see where having parts of the American population being conservative in values, hardworking and religious is a problem. If anything the need for those people in the population is greater then ever. To argue that we need to, “ get over it”, is a very weak defense of unacceptable behavior. To say that it is society's fault is one of the last refuges of scoundrels.

Note to talking heads:

Puritans and other "Protesters" built this country long before democrats came along and LONG before socialism became chic.

Well I suppose we could get more comfortable with the idea of the President using the Oval Office sink for purposes it wasn’t designed for and all that - but it’s the bald-faced lying and covering up that the “puritanical” American people had better NEVER get “anesthetized” to...

What is wrong with us? Why do we react so strongly to our elected officials’ erect penises in our Twitter feeds and emails?? We are SO BACKWARD and PRUDE. I am sure that in Europe they enjoy glancing at their female leaders’ gynecologist-view photos over breakfast, and delight in their Prime Minister’s home porn videos over lunch.
