And also note that the speed of a processor doesn’t scale with the number of components. The doubling of components doesn’t mean that you get a doubling of speed.
Not any more, perhaps - but for a long time it did - just by the brute fact of reducing the distance that the signals had to travel, and thus the time required for that transit. I'm not clear on exactly what has stopped the improvement in clock speed.
