Should we have brought Bin Laden out alive?

Apparently, the team going after OBL was instructed not to bring him out alive. I have already read several posts saying that it is a good thing OBL was killed, rather than captured alive. Donald Rumsfeld just said the same thing on the Greta Van Susteren show. The usual rationale is that it avoids the chaos and confusion that would necessarily have been the outcome of a trial.

I’m not so sure.

First, and possibly most important, consider the intelligence we might have gotten from him. The amount of crucial information he had must have been staggering. He was obviously not hiding away in a cave, as some of us suspected, so he was probably in close daily contact with whatever is left of the Al Qaida network. It’s not clear how much he would have talked, particularly under Obama’s interrogation rules, but interrogators have said in the past that sometimes arrogant prisoners will talk about anything, just to demonstrate how important they are. And, skilled interrogators have ways of getting information, even without waterboarding.

Also, don’t discount the symbolic benefit of having OBL in custody. OBL is now a martyr, even without a grave to visit. And he will be considered to have died a hero. If he had been captured, and pictured in chains, it would have been an enormous psychological blow to a society that puts great emphasis on symbolism.

Bring him out alive and he becomes the property of the Holder Justice Dept. Good times there.

Plus he becomes an iconic figure, making speeches, writing books and fatwas and rallying the devotees.

Wow. Really? Alot of Monday Night Quarterbacking from the armchair brigade. I mean come on....this is getting ridiculous. The SEALS did what they thought was immediate and did a great job.

Dead or alive was the choice? Personally I find the dead part more gratifying

I believe that the computer media captured is a gold mine and is a far superior option to the prospect of the circus that would have surrounded his trial.

He should only have been brought out alive if there was some way to do it without his capture being made public.

The problem with capturing him and telling the world about it is two-fold: (1) what do you do with him, and (2) how does the U.S. respond if Pakistan demands his return?

My two cents......remember Munich, 1972? If we arrest him, how long until they hijack a plane or a ship or a school etc? How many children would we be willing to see die just to keep him, cause I guarantee the other side would be willing to kill children in order to free him.

I’m glad the SEALs killed him. I just wish we had the body so we could have women touch it, dogs pee on it, feet and shoes stomp all over it, and when we tired of the sport of desecrating his filthy carcass, we could sew it inside a pig and leave it in the desert to rot.

And we could put it all on prime time teevee! Multiple episodes! We’re all into reality teevee, right?

Yeah, we should have kept him alive. Then he would have had a trial, maybe even found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. While there he could have written his memoirs and it would be a #1 seller. The next LIb President would give him a pardon and make him a citizen of the USA, then he would go to Harvard, Yale, UCLA or Columbia to teach. THE MAN WAS GUILTY OF AN ADMITTED ATROCITY! HE GOT WHAT HE DESERVED.

Bingo! Alberta raised a smart child. I'd add that after he was drained of info he would be terminated, incinerated and tossed to the oceanic winds before his capture was made public.

No bringing him out alive to Holder. No reading him his Miranda Rights. Someone had the right idea.

Say what?
Kill 'em all.
Simply put, there's just no other way.

Actually I think the military did this one just right. Kill the sob and dump him in the deep sea. Solves all sorts of problems.

I personally think he should have been brought out alive and released ... after dark at Ground Zero ... after suitable advance notice to the Police and Fire Departments, of course.
