The George W. Bush They Never Knew
Weekend Libertarian ^ | 12 April, 2011 | B.P. Terpstra

As a critical thinker, I never bought the media’s sales pitch that Obama was the messiah we were all waiting for.

[...]

As for the media’s anti-Republican hysteria? Granted, not all journalists referred to Bush as the devil, but many portrayed him as one. In Decision Points, though, we meet a greyer, funnier, and humbler man, who lost a sister to leukemia but also treasured simpler times.

On quitting cigarettes (page 1):

I have a habitual personality. I smoked cigarettes for about nine years, starting in college. I quit smoking by dipping snuff. I quit that by chewing long-leaf tobacco. Eventually I got down to cigars.

On deciding to leave alcohol (pages 2 &3):

It took about five days for the freshness of the decision to wear off. As my memory of my hangover faded, the temptation to drink became intense. My body craved alcohol. I prayed for the strength to fight off my desires. I ran harder and longer as a way to discipline myself. I also ate a lot of chocolate. My body was screaming for sugar. Chocolate was an easy way to feed it. This also gave me another motivation for running: to keep the pounds off.

On the simple life as a child, Big Oil, and hookers (page 5):

We spent our first year in the blue-collar town of Odessa, where there were few paved streets and frequent dust storms. We lived in a tiny apartment and shared a bathroom with – depending on whom you ask – either one or two prostitutes. Dad’s job was on the bottom rung of an oil services company. His duties included sweeping warehouses and painting pump jacks.

A page from George Duhbya's Decision Points

Eight Wasted Years
...Margaret Thatcher used to talk about the “ratchet effect.” When the Left gets power, she said, they drive everything Left; when the Right gets power, they slow the Leftward drive, perhaps even halt it for a spell; but nothing ever gets moved to the Right. U.S. politics in the 21st century so far bears out this dismal analysis. What does the Right have to show for eight years of a Republican presidency? I supported George W. Bush in 2000 because I thought he had a conservative bone in his body somewhere. I supported him in 2004 because I thought him the lesser of two evils. At this point, I wouldn’t let the fool park his car in my driveway. Bruce Bartlett was right, every damn word...
Bill Gertz interview on Hannity and Colmes
Gertz: Well he casts himself as a compassionate conservative and I argue that he's neither. That his administration is neither. He's done tremendous damage to the conservative movement...

LOL: That’s what the American and international media told me! When I first heard of Bush many years ago, I was encouraged to believe the Republican came from a family of rich and evil oil lords.

GWB. Good, decent man.

Disappointing POTUS.

I remember a time on FR when posting such things got you banned or suspended.

Regardless it was still true.

As a person, I like GWB, but he simply wasn’t a conservative. He also set in motion things like the “Patriot” Act that will do far more harm than good and has the potential to be horribly abused.

GWB. Good, decent man. Disappointing POTUS.

That reflects my estimation.

One consideration though, he did have to deal with 9/11.

And, amazing, amazing, how the Media controls people's minds.

Since about 2003 I took my frustration out on the my DC Chapter friends when we met at Walter Reed on Friday nights. Most didn’t believe me that he was destroying the conservative brand.

Spilled milk. Water under the bridge now.

Bush dealt with a lot more than 911. What if Gore or Kerry were in office how would things have turned out?

Give me a President that loves our country and who has integrity. Bush has it zero doesn’t.

I just wish he didn’t spend so much in an effort to be liked.

I loved the book. I now have it on CD and listen to it, from time to time, on the drive to work.

A think he is a good man although not a true conservative. However he was better than Gore or Kerry would have been or Obama is.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to look at the CD (sounds good). Trust me, a few more months under Obama and more people will miss the Republicans. Imagine America under Gore. All recycling bins and more terrorist threats.

I agree with you – better the devil you know, as some like to say.

Bush wasn’t perfect. But some forget the Democrats were running Congress, he was being demonized 24/7 by the elite media, and terrorists attacked America, among other things.

It’s too easy for armchair experts to judge him harshly in my view. History will be kinder. Yes. He is a good man.
