Darpa awards contract to create a cheetah robot that is faster than the fastest human alive.

On Friday, Boston Dynamics has announced that the United States Department of Defense's research agency, DARPA, has awarded them a contract to build a new four-legged robot that will be fast enough to chase, evade, and hunt down the fastest human.

They tried that with wolves, but PETA protested that they were suffering from high cholesterol from eating the slow, fat people at the back of the herd.

I was also thinking about the powerplant on this thing. It looks like it would weigh at least as much as a dirtbike, probably more. When you add in all the other power requirements it would need to be effective (thermal optics, complicated and elaborate hydraulics, etc.) you’re talking about a requirement for a whole lot of juice. Now, for it to be as silent and stealthy as they suggest, that would imply electric power, and you’re right on...the batteries alone would be huge for extended activity. Perhaps enough to send into a building like we’d currently employ a K9, but I see protracted battlefield use a good way off in the future...or at least until Iron Man’s chest implant reactor becomes available.
