For Ringo I would add “The Last Centurion.” It would also make liberal’s heads explode.

Then it’s on my list...I had a lot of LOL moments for LFoD. I’ll be checking into more of his stuff.

It's getting harder and harder to find real science fiction in the bookstores and libraries any more.

Have you tried any Warhammer 40K books? If I can offer an opinion, I've just been hooked for the past 5 years.

Try The Gaunts Ghost's series by Dan Abnett, they are now in omnibus versions, so it's quite a deal. I would also reccomend The Horus Heresy series. But in that world, although their are many different writers, Abnett's books are by far the best.

Thanks for the story, I would expect he would say something like that. I have not read the “Stairway to Heaven” book in 20-some years, but I remember “the main character” (Adams) was very angry about a bad divorce, lawyers and the IRS, and there was some heavy drinking involved. I’ll have to dig it out and give it another read, ha ha ha.

I LOVED Wash. Sad the end was so abrupt.

Amazing, I had the same reaction to Darwin's Radio! I is usually stupid to ever put today's political figures in a book about the future.

I still read a lot of Bear, but Brin's books are few and far between. I get tired of the preaching and the forced plot lines.

Most of the time I read almost anything I can find at a used book store, and learn through trial and error which authors I will read long term.

Glad to hear about Knight and Ringo. Will check them out.

Thanks for the feedback. Oddly enough, in the last week I have found that I am in the final running for a position to a writer, who is finishing up a sci-fi work. Now that’s serendipity.

Maybe I can offer some conservative insight, if solicited. Thanks guys/gals.

“It’s more that older liberal and radical ideas got stale. Fans will get bored with conservative or libertarian tendencies in time and look for something else.”

I agree. The attention span of the public at large is short, and their desire to be entertained by “novel” ideas, great.

SyFi has little to do with SciFi, sigh.

More like nothing...although most hard science fiction writers would cringe at your usage of the term SciFi. It's either called "Science Fiction" or just SF.

SyFy channel is broadcasting pure crap, but to be honest there is very little quality material for them to broadcast, so it was inevitable.

I’ve just recently started reading John Ringo...don’t know why it took so long for me to “discover” him. Reading the Posleen war series right now.

Everything you mentioned is either cinema or TV. You really need to try reading some good science fiction novels. There are a huge number of excellant novels that would make great movies, but the idiots in Hollywood keep thinking they can do better, so they write their own stuff (which is 99% crap).

For example, The Mote in God's Eye or Lucifer's Hammer by Niven and Pournelle could be made into a blockbuster movie, but instead we get crap like Avatar.

Maybe a writer would call it SF but you can’t search that on Free Republic. SciFi works well for us nerds here. ;)

Though I may be hijacking an old thread, seems like here's a good place to ask!

Why does a writer like Jerry Pournelle, who writes about advanced technologies like ramscoops and ringworlds still use a 1997-looking Netscape HTML blog?!

I doubt it's getting more conservative.
From the literary science fiction convention I attend every March (Lunacon, Rye, NY), it's a liberal bunch out there writing, and they are very non-apologetic about it. Not talking a lot of big names, but they sell a lot and some of them are the future of the business.

Me? I'll only be able to publish my writings if I go the self-publish to Kindle route, I think.

There are still a lot of commies in the SF community.
Many of the classics like Arthur C. Clarke are commies. Eric Flint is a former union organizer who now writes for the Baen stable. He’s a pretty reasonable commie, though. Supports RKBA, and bunch of other reasonable stuff. David Weber says that the only thing he disagrees with him over is ownership of natural resources. Or something like that.

Dr. Pournelle is a right/libertarian. Niven less so.
