Why Senators Corker and Alexander (TN) voted for the START Treaty
Self | 1-15-11 | 30Moves

I got an email from my Senators that explained why they voted for the treaty.

They made a deal with Obama. Tax dollars for Tennessee!

They met with him told him they would vote for the treaty and for money to update our nuclear weapons facilities and asked that he request those funds in his budget (quote):

Implementation includes spending $3.6 billion for a new secured area at Oak Ridge, covering 15 acres instead of the current 150. It means tearing down the last 17 Cold War buildings. The more efficient facility will save taxpayers $200 million each year in operation costs. Finally, the plan commits $1 billion for Energy Department pension funds, a great help to the 7,000 Tennesseans who work at Oak Ridge. (end quote)

Wow - 1 Billion in Pension funds. What a deal.

They then assured me that the treaty does not hamper development or deployment of our missile defense. Ha - DUMA seems to think it does.

I told them in a return email that they had been punked!

I was going to laugh at you for having such dopey RINO Senators. Especially Corker. Then I remembered. Bob Casey is still my Senator. Now I am crying.

Umm why did they need money to update your nuclear weapons facilities the START treaty is supposed to do away with them? Right?

Each old building must be tested for hazardous substances before, during, and after demolition. That’s an expensive way to make the facilities more efficient.

Maybe Casey can get a job dealing cards at an Ed Rendell casino! When he gets canned next time around. :)

I don’t know...maybe I’m missing something. But voting on a treaty should NOT be based on what promises are made in the US...but rather what the terms are and whether it makes sense.

Overall...I prefer to simply ignore this treaty, because I know that if I studied it, I would NEVER get any sleep.

Worse yet is something I have heard Alexander say many times:

“we will still have enough nukes to blow anything they send over here to kingdom come”.

Is he serious? - what if they send an EMP? Will we use a nuke to knock it down?

As I understand it the SE portion of the US is mostly unprotected by a missile defense system.

Anyone know the facts?

I complained to them too, very early on...their response, more or less in unison, was that this Treaty did not damage the National Security of the US, despite what Senator Graham had concluded. Not a word about jobs. I then wrote them about the headlines in the Knoxville News Sentinel the day after the vote: ~~”Much Money for Oak Ridge” as a result of the Treaty being passed. They sound like “Ben Nelson” and “Nebraska,” second verse. I feel like spitting nails each time I think about this farce...look at how they both voted in the Lame Duck session, virtually as Demoncrats in support of Dear Leader...disgusting! Do I need to elaborate on my feelings?

It’s deals like this that are destroying our country. If DOD or executive branch has a suggestion about spending money to rennovate or change some facilities then it should be submitted as a bill to Congressional debate. Exchanging for votes subverts congressional deliberation on both sides — the bill being voted and the expense of the bribe.

Politics as usual. I wonder if it's coming to an end; if there's been a paradigm shift or not...

I already let Corker know that the TEA Party is supporting someone else to take his place in 2012.

He loves to play in the sandbox with the big boys in DC.

What is your solution? A New Cold War? If so, thanks but no thanks. We’re broke.

My solution - Perhaps a better treaty that would have allowed us to maintain and improve our defense systems. That language was in the preamble and so our government said that part wasn’t binding but the Russians say it is.

The Russians gave up things that don’t matter to them and we gave up things that were vital.

If we are so broke why the 1 Billion for pensions?

Are you serious? We are only able to pay for these pensions from borrowed and printed money. Is not only unsustainable but will ruin or economy if not reversed.

As to your other points, our Pentagon budget now has almost nothing to do with "defense" and everything to with world policing. The costs of world policing, including bases in 120 countries, now add up to a trillion per year!
