What went wrong with the Whitman campaign?

In the springtime, strategists for Meg Whitman in her campaign for governor of California probably felt they’d died and gone to heaven in. In a state roiled in political in-fighting, effectively bankrupt, and a political atmosphere in which the electorate was sharpening pitchforks and boiling tar, you had a non-political woman, an internet legend, immensely successful, running as a moderate Republican, which all the pundits agree is the only way for Republicans to get elected in California. Meg Whitman, the first female billionaire in fact, with all the private money available one could ever hope to spend. And the opponent? Laughable, really. A former two-term governor who earned the moniker “Governor Moonbeam” for outlandish ideas, who turned the state’s large surplus into large deficit, raised taxes, and left it with a (then) record unemployment rate and a shrinking economy.

I’m with you, More Perfect Union, she struck it big time in the money, she got the wind in her sails at just the right time, but being a street fighter, growing up leading her H.S. team in basketball, or us being able to see her as a regular ‘one of us’. It didn’t have the emo connect. She should have tried to have helped that Hispanic girl get her papers, instead of firing her. People would have forgiven her for wanting to help. I didn’t like the ATTACK Brown ads all of the time. She can do this because she has money. I voted for her.

Conservatives do not get excited to go out and vote for RINOS. Ask Bob Erhlich of MD.

I was going to add something to this thread, but you’ve already said everything I had to say...

Bottom Line: If she was gonna spend that much she should have just offered the voters $20 per vote. Would have been much cheaper in the end.

You have a point. California is going down regardless so it’s best to be driven down with Democrats at the wheel. No sense in having a Republican take the heat for that unfixable mess.

The majority of California voters are either stupid or amnesiac. Simple as that.

She lost mainly because the large population areas of Calif. are by a large majority libs and the illegal and minority vote are almost all dems.

That makes it almost impossible now for even a moderate Republican to win.

Maybe in a few years as Calif goes over the cliff but I’m not holding my breath.

She should open a business in Texas and make it successful with many jobs just to taunt them

Ebay is in the process of moving many jobs to other states.

Why pay people who don't like you?

As I posted in another thread... Brown won the SF Bay area and urban Los Angeles County. Whitman won the rest of the state:

Election results:

Entire State:
Brown - 3,988,409
Whitman - 3,064,982

LA, and the 8 Counties surrounding the SF Bay:
Brown - 2,103,953
Whitman - 995,563

The Rest of California (the other 49 counties)
Brown - 1,884,456
Whitman - 2,069,419

I held my nose and voted for her but she really wasn’t that much better than Brown on the social issues (for gun control) so why vote for another Arnold RINO type? But really she lost because the demographics of CA have changed, whites are just another minority here and the Rats managed to get out the vote big time in all the Hispanic, Asian and Black areas who vote mostly for democrats. This state will never ever be able to elect another conservative to state wide office again. Kind of sucks having lived here since 1984 I’ve seen this place slowly turn into Mexico North. But as they say, CA is a trend setter so be fore warned, this is coming to your State, sooner than you might expect.

There are at least four reasons in that paragraph alone.

Arnold went wrong with the Whitman campaign.

Who'da thought voting for star power at the expense of values in 2003 would have implications in 2010.

Jerry Brown’s devastating ad showing Meg parroting Arnold. True or not, it worked.
