I am bothered by this story. I saw her on an earlier rerun of an interview on FOX and she seems too controlled. Maybe she is on meds..Then I saw her on Greta and the sister in law was far more emotional about this than the wife seems to be..she seems so matter of fact.
The other thing that bothers me is that Falcon Lake is known to be a dangerous place to go and what sane person would go to the Mexican side when there are the pirates..At the same time it is well known the Mexican authorities are not all that helpful either and with the drug cartels in that area does anyone seriously think the cops in Mexico are going to really look for the perps? One day, if there indeed is a body in those waters it will wash up a la the Peterson case.

In many ways this does not pass the smell test..could he have been involved in drug trafficking?Or could they have been thought to have seen something?

I'm starting to wonder if it is a scheme for the husband to "disappear". Two things that are odd, the "witness" who wants to remain anonymous and from what I know of the story is the only one who has said they heard gunshots (I might be wrong about that) and I thought I heard something about it was a very calm day and there were other fishermen out there that didn't hear or see anything... ??? The other thing that makes NO sense is they went to the Mexican side because the husband wanted to get a look at an old mission???? If he was on a jet ski, I highly doubt he had a camera with him.....and was that REALLY a priority, knowing how dangerous the area is?? Also, it's pretty flat with low foliage, easy to see distance.... I would think if there were others out there they would have noticed something....

Take a look at this article from the UK's Daily Mail:

Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said Mrs Hartley's story was so incredible that at first he wondered if she had concocted it as a cover story after murdering her husband himself....Texas officials have been warning against activity on the lake after at least five reported run-ins with pirates this year. Previous hold-ups have never been deadly. 'I'm not trying to place the blame on her or him,' Gonzalez said. 'But we've told people not to go over there, and now this happens.' He told the Post: 'When I asked if she knew how dangerous it was to go to Mexico, she quickly changed the subject. 'I didn't pursue it. I didn't want her to feel guilty.'

The sheriff decided she's not guilty because she "was unable to stop sobbing".Maybe it's a hoax (for insurance money, for eg), maybe not, but the notion that a lot of tears automatically disproves guilt is based on how grief stricken people act in Hollywood movies, not reality. Plenty of people respond to grief by going into a nearly catatonic state. They are in a state of near-shock, and so they don't cry at all . So tears or lack thereof don't prove anything one way or another, and I do agree with you that this story seems a little "off".

They were living in Reyonsa, Mexico about 2 1/2 years and just recently moved back to the US. This may have lessened their fear of going across the border on the lake. Who knows at this stage of the investigation.
