Nice to see the Tom Johnson version of the Doobies rather than Michael McDonald version.

Funny how old rock bands were so defined by their lead singers - there's the Bon Scott version of AC/DC versus the Brian Johnson AC/DC, there's the Doobies, and of course there's the David Lee Roth version of Van Halen versus the much-reviled Sammy Hagar version.

If I were picking favorite Doobie Brothers songs by lead singer, I guess they'd be "Black Water" and "Taking It To The Streets".

I read somewhere that Michael McDonald’s claim to fame was to turn the biker band into the mellow fellows.

"Tom Johnson"

You got that right. McDonald was a bad choice. Awful pc songs with a fake soul voice.

Actually, Skeeter, it’s Tom Johnston (with a “T”). But I agree. The Doobie “SOUND” was always best with Tom doing the lead vocals. Nothing against Michael McDonald, but he took the band in an entirely different direction. And it hurt the band, musically, except for the occasional hit (”What A Fool Believes” and “Takin’ It To The Streets”). Beyond that, I had always hoped Tom would rejoin the band. When they released “The Doctor” in the early 90s, I knew the Doobies were BACK.

All we need now is a sequel to “Romancing The Stone” where the Micheal Douglas character finds another Rolling Stone magazine touting how good the new Doobie Brother CD is and have his character look bewildered and say, “What? The Doobies got back together? FAR OUT!”
