Can you provide a link?
Try this: (no guarantee it will work)
That didn't work But, here it is on YouTube:
LOL. They used to let us spaced-out hippies up on the stage and sing with them at the Chateau, some even brought their dogs up on stage, lol...boy, those were the days.
BTW, I'm a retired chip-maker.
And therein lies the problem, folks. All the backup vocals were canned.
Like a poor cover band.
You got that right. McDonald was a bad choice. Awful pc songs with a fake soul voice.
Nope. I’ve been writing for Grand Rants from day one. That said, however, I’m a huge fan of GOOD rock music, having spent some time back in the early ‘70s working with another band (even more famous than the Doobies, but I’m not gonna drop names).
No, my enthusiasm is based on my appreciation for the Doobies as rock artists who have had the guts to come back and buckle down to the point where they are better performers now than they were 30 years ago. More to the point, they have the same “Tom Johnston” sound like the Doobies of that era. How many groups from the ‘70s can make the claim they sound like they did back then? If you were ever a Doobie Brothers fan, this CD will justify your faith in them.
Whether you take the opportunity to listen to the music or not doesn’t phase me one way or the other. I’m not associated with the band in any way, so it’s no skin off my back. However, anyone who enjoys GOOD, SOLID ROCK & ROLL from back when music was REAL, you’ll enjoy the CD and you might want to catch the (free) live broadcast today.
Actually, Skeeter, it’s Tom Johnston (with a “T”). But I agree. The Doobie “SOUND” was always best with Tom doing the lead vocals. Nothing against Michael McDonald, but he took the band in an entirely different direction. And it hurt the band, musically, except for the occasional hit (”What A Fool Believes” and “Takin’ It To The Streets”). Beyond that, I had always hoped Tom would rejoin the band. When they released “The Doctor” in the early 90s, I knew the Doobies were BACK.
All we need now is a sequel to “Romancing The Stone” where the Micheal Douglas character finds another Rolling Stone magazine touting how good the new Doobie Brother CD is and have his character look bewildered and say, “What? The Doobies got back together? FAR OUT!”
No, I don’t think there are any hard feelings. Michael McDonald is actually ON the CD in one song (guest appearance). Also, he occasionally appears with them as a guest when it’s mutually convenient.
As for Skunk, he’s now into politics. Not sure if or why he wasn’t in the clips. Maybe he was the one holding the camera? LOL.
I have no problem with them or their music.
I just don't see how releasing yet another album of that kind of material is going to be one of the key musical events of 2010.
The reason given as to why the HOF hasn’t nominated the Doobies is because they had too many different members over the years. That’s a cop-out if I ever heard one.
Steeley Dan is in there and they’ve had more members than the NY Yankees.
Chicago is in there and they’ve had more members in them than Lindsay Lohan.
Personally, I think it’s a personal issue involving Jan Wenner of Rolling Stone magazine who reportedly once said the Doobies would never be inducted to the HOF (for whatever reason) maybe he has a personal issue with the Doobies. Maybe they didn’t autograph his album. Or kiss his ass enough. Whatever. The Hall of Fame is a JOKE until and unless they acknowledge the 40 year career of the Doobies... who are still going stronger and better. Their career has been longer and more enduring than half the groups in there. I mean, come on... the STOOGES have more right to be in the HOF than the DOOBIES? I rest my case.
The “new” bass player you’re referring to is “Skylark.” He’s been with them for over 10 years. Unfortunately, he’s recovering from a stroke. As to the accusation that all the vocals were canned... anyone can make a BS accusation like that. Prove it and you’ve got something worth mentioning. I’ve been to several of their concerts and was lucky enough to attend the sound check at one of them. Nothing was or is faked. Sounds a little like someone didn’t get the autograph he was looking for. Waahhh!
I was never much of a fan of the Doobie Brothers, although some of their songs are not bad at all, but I like Michael McDonald.
The background vocals were canned. I've been in the band business since 1973, my friend, and I'm most likely more up on the technology than you. Sorry about your buddy the bass player, but he wasn't on his game when I saw them at Summerfest a few years ago. Maybe he should have worn a "wireless mic" so guys like me wouldn't be able to call him out.
Tell you what, brew:
Go to http://www.ustream.tv/ciscotv and watch them play live.
2 things:
1.) I’ve been at enough of their shows to know there’s no vocal track used at their concert.
2.) Don’t worry about Hells Angels: I’ve got an Aegis Cruiser aimed at the ass of anyone who spreads false rumors about my buds. Ya feel me? LOL
Tell you what, Chief. Arguing about this isn’t worth your time or mine. ;)
Hey Lefty
You got it, man! Some of Eric Burden’s best work was with War. Loved “Spill The Wine!”
