Nice to see the Tom Johnson version of the Doobies rather than Michael McDonald version.
Funny how old rock bands were so defined by their lead singers - there's the Bon Scott version of AC/DC versus the Brian Johnson AC/DC, there's the Doobies, and of course there's the David Lee Roth version of Van Halen versus the much-reviled Sammy Hagar version.
If I were picking favorite Doobie Brothers songs by lead singer, I guess they'd be "Black Water" and "Taking It To The Streets".

Wouldnt he already be a Hall Of Fame inductee via Steely Dan?
Fagen and Becker hired a lot of first-rate studio musicians for their albums, but they were never considered part of Steely Dan. I don't follow the Rock and Roll HOF - are Fagen and Becker even in there?

They didn’t show Michael McDonald and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter in the old clips...I hope there’s no bad blood...

I guess it could be summed up by the word 'authentic'. Johnston was with the band during their early years in the Santa Cruz area, Hells Angels & all, which sorta remained their image.
Michael McDonald, a pretty good songwriter in his own right, was too slick. IMO.

The HOF has become such a joke, it is almost better that they are NOT in there yet. I bet you some of the judges say, when asked about the Doobies: "Didn't they write that annoying Jeeeeeeeeeeesussssss song?". To them that sufficient reason to keep them out.

Shame Tiran Porter wasn’t part of the band then, IMHO has bass sound was a major staple of the early Doobies albums.

They are in the HOF, but only Fagen and Becker were included.

I liked the McDonald addition. It gave the Doobies a new lease on band life.
I know I'm in the minority on this...

Doobie is a strange family name. Mr. and Mrs. Righteous agree with you...

Reminds me of when Depeche Mode rode into the venue I work at with 8 53’ trailers of gear, 2 of which were speakers, only to find out the whole show was “on tape”.

I read somewhere that Michael McDonald’s claim to fame was to turn the biker band into the mellow fellows.

I used to go to a place, The Chateau, in the Santa Cruz mountains in the early 70's and listen to these guys play before they were all together and called themselves the Doobie Brothers.
(ahem) I was a young guy then.

Big Doobies fan from back in the day, before the Michael McDonald version, Stampede is still one of my all-time favorite albums.I agree 100%, Stampede is also my favorite, "Neal's Fandango".
In the summer of '75, I would be driving down the Garden Sate Parkway, to the Jersey shore, and that song would cycle up on the 8 track, I'd be driving 90 MPH to keep up with the singing. LOL
BTW, that was 35 yrs ago, 'cause my 35 yr reunion is this Nov 13th. God, I'm getting old.

I have the Best of the Doobies 2 album, still unopened in the original plastic.

Never understood this glaring omission.

“Doobie is a strange family name. The brothers must have been stoked up about it.”
“They ain’t related...but they do be brothers.”
The way one of our local radio guys used to always introduce a Doobies song.

Not many people know that one of the Doobies, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter is responsible for the Aegis Cruiser being part of our missile defense architecture and he's a consultant to the Pentagon on Missile Defense.
Jeff Baxter, MDA consultant!
