For all the crap Nokia has been getting lately about falling behind, not innovating, or releasing products that dont really compare with the competition, you could be forgiven in thinking that they may be on deaths door.
So youd probably be surprised to hear that Nokia still move more smartphones than the Big Two. How many you ask? Try about 260,000 a day. To put that into perspective, last I heard, Apple ship somewhere around 80,000 iPhones per day, and Android activate 200,000 devices per day.

Compare that to ~50 million iPhones sold over 4 years.
Nokia got the message with their slip in market share, and pretty much wiped clean the top levels of management. They're going to be VERY tough to dethrone from the top of the hill in smart phones!
Just a little “sanity check” in the smart phone wars. EVERYONE trails Nokia - not just in market share, but in actual sales per day as well...
First things first in a recession, eh?
Right now, I’m still using my old BlackJack, and waiting to see what the Windows 7 phone looks like.
So once again the macbots start trashing people.
Yet Nokia still sells more smartphones per day... Imagine if they made a big push into the US market! They’d probably be close to 400,000 smartphones a day.
I’ve seen the phone technology in use in parts of Asia. The functionality availability there seems to be far above that of the US. Things like cops handing out speeding tickets using their smartphones. More applications and better functionality. The phones in the US all seem to be more limited.
I use “pay by phone” a lot in Asia. You pay for your snack or items at the local grocery store via your cell phone - VERY convenient!
Why do the companies limit the functionality available in the US? Is it the size and diversity of the network?
Hmmm... China has both GSM and CDMA networks, and has about 650 MILLION users, and geographically is about the same size as the US, so it’s not the network diversity or the size of the market.
I think it’s just the fact the carriers don’t want to share “their network” for free tasks like “pay by phone”. They’d want to charge you for it, somehow. Yet the first one who offered it, and hooked up with Safeway/McDonalds/Starbucks would make a KILLING by gaining new subscribers.
I guess when you sell over 3 times the phones Apple sells then the problems that occur are just relative.
only a marxist would think “pay by phone” wasn’t orwellian.
Do you use a credit card?
Talk about a crazy number. The annual report stated this...
More than 1.2 billion people use a Nokia mobile device each and every day.
Yep, they are the 900 pound gorilla in the phone market! That number means 1 out of every 5 people in the entire world uses a Nokia phone. A 20% market penetration!
In another way of looking at things, if ALL 50 million iPhones sold to date were still being used, that means for ever iPhone user there are 24 Nokia users.
I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect them to achieve the growth rates of the other players in the market, given their total worldwide dominance... They are so big they cannot grow but by trickles here and there.
no. do you? I have a website for ya if you do.
I use credit cards. And debit cards.
You really do not use a credit card? No debit card? You pay cash for everything?
No, I pay check for everything. Unless it’s saturday through thursday. then I pay cash for everything.
Why?
I don’t own a debit card. I own one credit card for emergencies.
Well, OK then... I guess I don’t see a “pay by phone” as any more Orwellian than credit or debit cards. Must be interesting when you travel, or want to rent a car or hotel room...
