Oh, I get it now. It’s a liberal guilt trip shakedown. My friends who have kids in school have to pony up to the teacher for supplies, and then the supplies go into a cabinet so the kids who don’t have as much money can share too. But if you’re in a school where the parents ALL claim they can’t support their childrens educations, probably because they refused to participate in their own, then the purrents guilt trip the lily white lieberal into going out and buying them out of her OWN pocket. Nice. No sympathy.
“Many (most?) teachers lay out around $500 per year from their own pocket to buy materials for their classrooms.”
They can always hold a bake sale.
They can't do that ... someone may be allergic to nuts or flour or chocolate or whatever.
I mean, after all there are rules to prevent kids from bringing sweet or sugary items (or which may contain nuts or coconut oil or some other off-the-wall ingredient) for lunches, or birthdays, or just to share with their friends.
Would YOU buy a soy granola bar at a bake-sale from these people?
OK, well I’ll have to believe that then, because I know the way Vannity badgers them over presidential plans.
BTTT
The comments on the original article are hilarious.
Here is one time I might be able to be convinced to support cloning....:D
He should move to NY and run for governor.
“Not half as abnoxious as ‘Let me be clear...”
That too. (I hope they learn where the exits are for both houses of congress.)
Me too ...
I am sick and tired of politicians saying something one day - then coming out the next day to say that its not what they meant or that their words were "taken out of context".
Thats what I liked about Reagan - didn't always agree with him, but he meant what he said and he said what he meant ... he told you what he believed - 100% !!!
So, agree with him or not - you always knew where he stood ...
I agree fully.
He pretty much did. He started with a $1B shortfall from the previous year [when Corzine spent the one-time boost like a drunken sailor in a French whorehouse on "Dollar Day"]. He only cut $820M, which meant that he actually spent $180M more of taxpayer funds over that from the previous year.
He said that if the teachers had taken a pay freeze [instead of an automatic 4.9% pay raise] AND contributed 1.5% of their income towards their healthcare, then $700M of the $820M cut would have been saved. So, the net cut from the previous year ould have only been $120M.
So, if an average teacher makes $55K - then, this year he got a $2695 raise. And, most teachers in New Jersey DO NOT contribute to their healthcare. Assuming $4K for an individual teacher, then this is a $6695 hit to the state per teacher. And, even if the teacher was made to contribute 8% of his health plan towards healthcare [92% covered by the state], his cost is only $320. So, the cost to the state would then be $6375.
If a teacher had taken the deal, he would have forgone a $2695 raise for one year [which he would not miss since he never had it to begin with]. And, he would contribute $320 towards his healthcare.
So, even if he has to pay $500 for supplies, that teacher is getting $6695 [ or $6375 if he pays 8%] in benefits [raise plus healthcare]. He is $6195 [or $5875] towards the good.
I CALL THAT A DEAL !!!
So am I, and I really don't understand what they're buying. Around here, the list from the school to the parents includes supplies that are then put in the teachers' cupboard, to be shared as needed among all the students. Things like glue, facial tissues, etc.
A few weeks ago on FR, there was a post showing the supplies list for this year from grade schools.
It included 4 rolls of TP per pupil in Honolulu - no lie !!!
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/business/economy/15supplies.html
Only 4 rolls?? What a bargain!! I’m thinking some kids could use WAY more than that! LOL!
"Uh, nobody has any idea what future estate tax laws are going to be so good luck and thanks for attending."
See, that would be a good answer.
I live in the real world where teacher salaries are actually frozen, so it boggles the mind to think of places like NJ or CA.
CgChief brought up a good point, though... sometimes people get a calling, even after having said they don't want it... we never know... From a fiscal standpoint, I like what I see in Christie. I don't have much insights into his national security, immigration and military stances, though, but so far, so good.
Yeah - only in states like those would teachers bitch about having to fork over a measly $500 for supplies when they get $6695 of bennies [raise and salary] in return.
And, remember, I based it on a single teacher's salary. If the teacher was in a family of four [and all were on his healthcare], the bennies would be something like this:
$2695 + $12000 = $14695 [if healthcare 100% paid by the state].
or:
$2695 + $11040 = $13735 [if healthcare 92% paid by the state].
So, $500 to get $14695 in bennies [if 100% paid by the state].
or:
$500 + $960 = $1460 to get $13735 in bennies [if 92% paid by the state].
THESE TEACHERS ARE GETTING SCREWED !!! /SARC
