There is an undeniable connection between the political battles of the 21st Century and the move away from teaching civics at all levels in the public education system during the later part of the 20th Century. The benefits of reinstituting a solid curriculum of civics into our school system, and ultimately our way of life, will be monumental.
We need to look no farther than our television set to find the cause and effect such a slide away from teaching civics has had on America, and in a larger sense, the global society.
Academy Award winning actor Richard Dreyfuss is promoting an initiative to make civics education a vital part of our public education process. According to the Dreyfuss Initiative:

Wow! Good for him!
A better start would be to send the President, his staff, the entire Executive Branch, Congress and even the Supreme Court to school so they can learn what the Constitution of the United States says.
Another blogger joined to pimp his blog.
When did Dreyfuss change his political stripes?
Even better start: send all of the above to Easter Island and start over.
I think trying to convince the high school and college kids that America DIDN’T win its independence from Vietnam is going to be a real b*tch.
F him. He was a big Bush hater and a Republican and Christian hater from Hollywood.
He’s trying to play catch-up with a lib version of Janine Turner and her project: http://constitutingamerica.org/ - follow it on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/ConstitutingAmerica
Civics in a ‘socialist nutshell’?
Amen.
But what would be better is for all politicians to read the Constitution and be able to pass a hard test on the Constitution before they are even considering running for any political office and that includes judges as well.
That should be the real litmus test.
Any politician or judge who does not score a passing grade, that is 70 or higher on such a written test, should resign or not run for office.

Exactly my thought. Perhap he’s one of the many soon-to-be Hollywood types with “buyer’s remorse” about Obama?
My antenna are tingling as well. I guess the big question would be whose version and meaning of civics, George Washington or Karl Marx?
Boy I’m confused! I thought Richard was a lib? :-/
If the blogger is truly a conservative he should know that Dreyfuss is the worst kind of leftest. His call for civics education is a ruse. The debate will be all left sided.
Civics Lesson #2: Discrimination, that is, showing discernment, is wrong everywhere and all the time.
Civics Less #3: White Christians are the source of all evil.
I think there are some Hollywood liberals who are even shocked at just how far left this communist totalitarian regime is going.
I think that scenario is very much like the 1950’s when well meaning and naive liberals started to realize just how destructive the communists among us really were and then turned against them by becoming informers.
Former party members informed on other party members who were actually hard core commies who sought the overthrow of the US from within.
I think this is starting to happen all over again.
I love the way you think! All it would take would be for ONE Presidential candidate to ask to be tested.
I’d wait until Dreyfuss fleshes out some of the pages on his web site before celebrating. Several pages are empty. And the pages that do have content read like he wrote them during a manic episode, and need editing.
Yes, the idea of this piece was to make that scumbag Dreyfuss face-palm. I’d say it’s a pretty good attempt. The last thing communists like Dreyfuss and his liberal Democrat ilk want is an America that understands the US Constitution.
