If Education Secretary Arne Duncan has his way, kids would be spending a lot more time at school and a three-month summer would be a thing of the past.
Duncan joked with attendees at a luncheon at the National Press Club Tuesday in Washington that he would like schools to stay open 13 months out of the year. Then he told the audience of over 100 that he seriously supports longer school hours.
In all seriousness, I think schools should be open 12, 13, 14 hours a day, seven days a week, 11-12 months of the year, Duncan said. This is not just more of the same. There would be a whole variety of after-school programs. Obviously academics would be at the heart of that. But you top it off with dancing, art, drama, music, yearbook, robotics , activities for older siblings and parents, ESL classes.

Just turn them over at birth and the state will maybe give them back when they’re adults.
They’re just looking at parents as breeding equipment.
10 hours is about my limit for a single-subject productive session.
12 hour school days are political indoctrination, and nothing else.
And all public school parents are selfish, do nothings who send their kids off to public schools for the free babysitting all day so they can shop til they drop without having to make arrangements of their own.
I know too many public school parents who called their own kids *rugrats* and admitted that they hated summer vacation and couldn’t wait for school to start again cause they couldn’t stand having their kids home all day with them.
Therefore, all public school parents must be like that.
they need more time for indoctrination and civilian police force training
“Someone remind me, why we even have an Education Secretary anyway.”
Who else is going to take the Education Manager’s notes and bring him coffee... Obama already has a job.
So I take it that in addition to the free breakfast and free lunch program they will have a free snack and free dinner program, too. Why bother even having kids if you’re just going to give them away. What’s the point?
Every parent who does not do their best for their children is a miserable human being. If you don't want kids, don't have them.
For the advancement of socialism, of course.
So he wants to turn public schools into community centers, ala Acorn. What is it with liberals who want to joke about 13 months or 57 States....are they attempting to belittle themselves to show us they are “just like us”?
Even my public school education was good enough to teach me that you don’t judge millions of people by one sample. What school system failed you so miserably?
You attacked all your fellow Freepers that homeschool in post #42. You lumped us all in with your lazy neighbors. Why the outrage when it is done back to you?
I only gave my experience on my neighbor...I don’t see it as the same.
“2-3 hours a day.
Please....homeschoolers hardly go to school at all.”
Your exact words. You said homeschoolers hardly go to school at all and then went on to “prove” this assertion with an example about your neigbors.
You couldn't post about homeschooling without portraying millions of people as the same as one homeschooling family you know? You couldn't muster enough sense to realize that a sample size of one tells you very little?
Hey, try wrapping the little grey cells around this one: How nice would you expect me to be if you said, "My black neighbors play loud music until three in the morning and never mow their lawn, so I feel sorry for any of you who have black neighbors, because they all act like that?"
Does this make you the cool FREEPER on the site?...
No, my inherent awesomeness makes me the cool Freeper on this site. It's awesomely awesome awesomeness imported from the western provinces of Awesomeland.
Of course you enjoy bashing your fellow FREEPER FRiends while you praise your liberal Democrats. Does not make sense and it saddens me.
1. So, you bash homeschoolers, who are one of the most universally conservative subgroups in American culture (in 11 years of homeschooling I've met one liberal homeschooler), and that makes you some great conservative? You chide me for "bashing" fellow FReepers but you bash with no evidence of consequence a group many FReepers are members of in a way that implies they are neglecting their children?
How do you manage to read your computer monitor with that big ol' plank sticking out of your eye?
2. Show me the liberal dems I've been praising. Links please.
3. If you don't like having your opinions challenged, join a knitting web forum. This is FR. Debate happens here.
4. You never answered my question. What school system failed you so badly that you think you can label a movement of millions by the stuff you see at one house from your window?
I went to Catholic School from K-12. Bachelors and Masters Degree are from public universities of Florida State and George Washington University.
Quite an extensive education.
So none of those schools taught you not to make judgments against millions of people based on the behavior of one household?
No but you did. That is why I actually like this site. I really do learn from all FREEPER FRiends on here even if I piss them off sometimes. I was reactive to a situation and foolishly gave a post that was cruel to the homeschool FREEPERS on this post which is terrible and I apologize to all FREEPERS.
Your gracious apology is happily accepted. Have a great day!
