As the controversy surrounding the video of former USDA employee Shirley Sherrod begins to dissipate with the revelation that her seemingly-racist statements, made at an NAACP banquet, were taken out-of-context, a new controversy is emerging involving the NAACP and the issue of racism. And it involves an organization that has been very prominent in the news lately the New Black Panther Party.
On May 3rd, in Atlanta, the New Black Panther Party (NBPP) held its 2010 National Black Power Convention, which brought together an odd assortment of racists, black separatists, and mainstream figures from the worlds of politics and entertainment. The preeminent racists at the convention were the New Black Panthers themselves. Over the years, NBPP National Chairman Malik Zulu Shabazz (who is listed on the NBPP website as the convener of the May 3rd conference) and Chief of Staff Hashim Nzinga (who is listed as the co-convener) have repeatedly made outrageous anti-Semitic remarks, from claiming that the Jews were behind the attacks on 9/11, to blaming Jews for slavery. In May 2007, Nzinga claimed that the country of Canada is run from Israel, and in July 2004 Shabazz and several other NBPP members attempted to interrupt an interfaith vigil in Washington D.C., which had been organized by a local Jewish community organization. Shabazz shouted at the Jewish members of the vigil, God condemns you The Zionist has no right to open his mouth anywhere on the planet.
During an April 2002 demonstration outside the Bnai Brith building in Washington D.C., Shabazz chanted Jihad and shouted Kill every goddamn Zionist in Israel! Goddamn little babies, goddamn old ladies! Blow up Zionist supermarkets!
The theme of killing babies was recently echoed by NBPP member King Samir Shabazz (the man behind the now-infamous Philadelphia polling place incident), who was caught on tape advocating the murder of white babies.
(It should be noted that many prominent members of the original 1960s Black Panthers, most notably co-founder Bobby Seale, have strongly condemned the NBPP for its racism and anti-Semitism)
Adding to the crop of racists at the May 3rd conference was Professor Griff, the former member of the rap group Public Enemy, who was forced out of the group after telling the Washington Post in a 1989 interview that Jews were responsible for the majority of wickedness that goes on across the globe.
The conference also included black radical Khalid Tariq al-Mansour, black separatist Omali Yeshitela, and a pre-taped message from Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
In a sign of the growing de-marginalization of black political extremism, the conference also included several mainstream African-American personalities, including actor/producer Tim Reid (Venus Flytrap from the 70s TV show WKRP in Cincinnati, and the dad from the 90s sitcom Sister, Sister), singer Erykah Badu, Andre 3000 (of the music group Outkast), Huffington Post contributor and former head of the Brotherhood Crusade Danny Bakewell, and Raymond Joseph, the Ambassador of Haiti (whose presence at a conference convened by anti-Semites seems like an odd way to thank the state of Israel for all of the aid it provided in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake).
Which brings us to the NAACP. In the official PDF advertising the black power conference, the conveners list dozens of organizations that helped sponsor or support the event. And the NAACP is on the list. Moreover, on the official website of the conference, in the top right-hand corner of the page, a laterally-scrolling box contains the logos of organizations that supported the event. And the NAACPs logo is prominently displayed among them.
I sought comment from the entire leadership of the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP President R. L. White, First Vice President Larry Epps, Second Vice President Henrietta Antoinin, and Executive Director Judith Withers Hanson to find out if it is indeed true that the NAACP had a connection to this conference.
No one has responded to my inquiry.
Did the NAACP, which only last week passed a resolution condemning the Tea Party movement for its supposed racism, help support a conference run by unapologetic racists and anti-Semites? Its important not to jump the gun on this story. But YBH! will continue to pressure the NAACP until it explains its connection to the conference.
And if the NAACP attempts to claim that it had no association, formally or informally, with the conference and its organizers, YBH! will push the NAACPs leaders to explain why, for nearly three months, they have allowed the New Black Panthers to prominently display the NAACP logo on their website.
I thought there were a lot of Jews involved in the NAALCP. At least in the start up.
‘No “good deed” goes unpunished’ is what I’ve heard.
Amen!
Those ncaa people sure are haters!
They supported the old black panthers, the nation of islam, and every other anti American entity to ever come down the pike.
Now they have their own personal racist in the white house and think they can get away with this ‘racist’ crap.
WE WILL REMEMBER COME NOVEMBER
First reason you never over play the race card. (growing de-marginalization of black political extremism)
NAALCP ARE the New Black Panthers.
There, fixed it.
Shocking!!!
