St Louis Cardinals manager, Tony LaRussa, gave his response to a question concerning the Tea Party attending the baseball game and what he thought about that (in an obvious attempt by the part of the journalist to drum up a negative comment about the Tea Party).
He was nonchalant in his answer. He basically shrugged his shoulders and said this is America, we can all agree and disagree and there is a lot to that that I agree with.
And then in a pleasant and surprising turn he switched the subject to the Arizona immigration law and his answer delighted me! He said, I am actually supportive of what Arizona is doing. If the national government isnt fixing the problem, you gotta take care of it yourself!
I just might have to start watching some baseball! Go Cardinals!!! I do love a man with some common sense!
The Best Manager in Baseball, and the Best Coach in Basketball both agree on Arizona.
Being in the Bay Area, I can say this with certainty: Tony LaRussa was a class act THEN, and he’s a class act NOW.
And the rest of you coaches that allow a visiting team from Arizona to be abused by your fans, etc., can go pound sand.
Baseball managers (good ones anyway) are problem solvers by nature...not bureaucratic or political ninnies. If a guy proves he can get the other side out in the ninth, then he’s the closer (he does the job), doesn’t matter if throws 95 or 75 mph.

Tony’s gonna take some heat for this.
Sorry about that, y’all.
Fascinating. I didn’t catch those comments from Coach Jackson last month. I had to look it up. Interesting.
So I guess it’s a safe bet that we won’t be seeing Los Cardinals jerseys.
It was worth repeating! Long time Cardinal Fan.
The only abuse I saw when the dimondbacks came to Detroit was the abuse that happened on the field.
ditto... as a former South Bay gal, i love that guy!
When the Tigers played in NY last week I noticed a Los Mets sign.
If he watches MSNBC, their poll says nearly 97% of the respondents agree with the AZ law.
The "Los Mets" thing greatly preceeded the Arizona immigration controversy.
For many years, it's been the name of their Spanish-language version of the team's website.
Tony has always been active in the community - specifically with ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation) which he founded 20+ years ago. The Cardinals have had a “puppies in the park” day the last few years because of him. People who are against Arizona have an agenda. Period. There is no reason to be against a state enforcing the law. None. If the law is unjust then you just need to find enough people who agree with you, but last I checked it was 80% of the population wanted this problem resolved once and for all.
Tony is not standing out from the crowd on these comments. I would venture to say anyone who isn’t profiting from illegals or who doesn’t just parrot whatever line they hear on some left website. But as a Cardinal fan and a conservative, it’s nice that he didn’t just take the easy way and pass it off. His stock just went up in my book.
Bill Veeck knew a good man when he saw one
As a lifelong fan of the Redbirds, I am proud of Tony today.
