Just listening to the soundtrack of the Michigan Education Association's rally Thursday told people the event's mood.
There was Twisted Sister's 80's anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It", some motivational music from the Rocky movies and the toga party favorite "Shout" with the lyrics blaring, "Say that you love me, say that you need me, say that you want me, say you wanna please me ..."
About 3,500 supporters of the Michigan Education Association showed up at the Capitol in Lansing at noon for a two-hour rally to get legislators to make education a funding priority.
The theme was "Enough is Enough."
According to the Michigan Department of Education, total revenue in constant dollars for public schools rose from $20.41 billion in 2005 to $20.79 billion in 2009.
The rally was big on chanting and cheerleading.
"Let teachers teach!" said Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, a Democrat who is running for Governor. "How about we get the politicians out of the way let teachers teach!"
But other "enemies" of the school system were targeted, such as privatization of certain school services.
Some school districts such as Oxford have had success stories with privatization. Oxford was able to hire nine extra custodians by privatizing and will have classrooms in the fall cleaned every day instead of every other day. And the district will save $5 million over five years, according to Superintendent William Skilling.
But many in Thursday's crowd weren't buying it...

The whining teachers have become nauseating. We get it already, you haven't had a raise in a year, your health insurance premiums keep increasing, the cost of living is rising, etc. Well everyone in the private sector is in the same boat and has had to live with those same realities.
Liberals, like the Baby Boomers whose pseudo-superiority and philosophy they share, won't buy anything except getting their way all the way all the time.
How is that going to happen when the Teacher's Unions are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat Party?
Don’t lump all baby boomers in the same boat because there are many of us boomers here.
“Klimaszewski said privatization was about who makes the money.
“They want their buddies at the (private) companies to make the money,” she said.”
Uh, hello educator idiot, without the private sector, you leeches would have no host.
“It takes jobs away from people who live in the area,” Utrup said.”
Only from the leeches.
It's as true as any generalization about any large group is, no matter how many of us there are here.
I’ve heard whispers that Engler may run when Debbie comes up, 2012. I hope so!
I hope that’s the case. Engler is the best man for the job. He had a few shortcomings, but he was a blessing for Michigan.
I think Governor Mitch Daniels (R-IN) is using a lot of the Engler playbook and enjoying immense popularity while doing much on the job and manufacturing front for Indiana.(Daniels is also attracting speculation for a ‘12 POTUS bid-but that’s another issue.)
Posthumus would be good, too, but he lacks charisma and the necessary tenacity to win an election.
I was listening to “We’re Not Gonna Take It” a few weeks ago and thought it could be the anthem for the Tea Party Movement.
The lyrics certainly speak more against unions and government control than they do against freedom:
Oh We’re Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain’t Gonna Take It
oh We’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore
we’ve Got The Right To Choose And
there Ain’t No Way We’ll Lose It
this Is Our Life, This Is Our Song
we’ll Fight The Powers That Be Just
don’t Pick Our Destiny ‘cause
you Don’t Know Us, You Don’t Belong
...
oh You’re So Condescending
your Gall Is Never Ending
we Don’t Want Nothin’, Not A Thing From You
your Life Is Trite And Jaded
boring And Confiscated
if That’s Your Best, Your Best Won’t Do
oh.....................
oh.....................
we’re Right/yeah
we’re Free/yeah
we’ll Fight/yeah
you’ll See/yeah
...
just You Try And Make Us
we’re Not Gonna Take It
come On
no, We Ain’t Gonna Take It
you’re All Worthless And Weak
we’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore
now Drop And Give Me Twenty
we’re Not Gonna Take It
oh Crinch Pin
no, We Ain’t Gonna Take It
oh You And Your Uniform
we’re Not Gonna Take It Anymore
