Currently we have two Jews on the court. Reliable rumor has it that Obummer’s most likely pick to replace Stevens is Elena Kagan (Jewish). Another possibly is also Jewish (Merrick Garland). Either one would make one third of the court Jewish. IOW Jews overrepresented by a factor of about 15 relative to their numbers in the general population.

Even if you have six Catholics on the court, they are not overrepresented by anything close to a factor of 15. But do you hear NPR kvetching that the court has too many Jews? Of course not.

(Note: I am allowed to point this out because I am Jewish.)

Since our country is founded upon Judeo/Christian values, I can see no better balance than Jews and Christians on the Supreme Court. I don’t care particularly whether the Christians are Catholics or Protestants, it’s their values that should be consistent with the faith. The same may be said of Jews — Orthodox or Reform — the basic values should be the same — Justice for All insorfar as imperfect humans can deliver it.

I just don’t think it’s going to be a woman....and we’re going to be totally surprised...and not happy. I predict a terrible fight.
