There’s a Yiddish expression which, roughly translated, states, “First of all, be a human being”. In other words, before you strive to be a parent, friend, neighbor, etc., be a human being. The Yiddish word for “human being” is one most people are familiar with - it’s the word “mensch” with all its connotations of form over substance.
