Piano Wreckage at Ithaca College
Bethany Stotts, December 16, 2009
The Ithacan Online reported on Monday that person(s) had vandalized more than 60 pianos in colleges practice rooms over the weekend. And this wasnt just scratches, it was violent vandalism:
More than 60 pianos were damaged Saturday night in the first floor practice rooms in the Whalen School of Music
Sophomore Andrew Thomson, a composition and instrumental major, said he went into the first floor of the Whalen Center to retrieve some equipment and found damaged equipment in all of the practice rooms.
Two or three [pianos] were flipped completely over, he said. Most were up against the doors somehow.
Thomson said the front sound panels and music racks were pulled off and most of the baby grand pianos were damaged.
Thomson said the damage comes before finals and juriesfinal playing examswhich start today.
Its perfect timing, Thomson said. Its wreaking havoc.
Article author Gillian Smith adds:
Donald McKechnie, piano technician, said at this point most of the pianos have been restored to working order, but some had extensive damage and had to be taken out of commission....

You talk to any music major about this and we all feel like there has been some horrific murder here, Thomson said.
Typical music major over-the-top drama (speaking as one). LOL. I'm going with the unprepared piano student theory. Juries do make people crazy.

Obviously it was a University Police investigation that went very wrong.
Vanessa Calaban, junior music major, organized a candlelight vigil in light of the vandalism.

Thereby proving that the college’s English and History departments have a lot to answer for, if this is the sort of critical thinking that is taught there.
If the same thing had happened to the computer lab, I would bet dollars to donuts the geeks would be holding some sort of vigil
Probably with LED lights....
These are musicians - never known to be the sharpest knives in the drawer.
Since the average person cannot even play an instrument, much less do so well, and the reason seems to be based on certain types of mental capabilities, I would say that musicians are among the sharper knives in the drawer.
I am one! Perhaps not the most logical folks would make more sense.
This one time, at band camp...
