Whale Wars: Sea Shepherd Launch Operation Waltzing Matilda (eco-piracy alert)

The latest campaign by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to disrupt Japan’s whaling industry in the Antarctic Ocean is underway.

Captain Paul Watson and his crew departed on the Steve Irwin from C-Dock, Victoria Quay in Fremantle at 10 AM with a large crowd of  supporters and local press to wave them off. A surprise visit by Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin was celebrated — with Bindi chiming in that she hoped the Japanese “would have zero kills” this year.

“We are very close to bankrupting the fleet and I am confident that we will hurt their profits significantly this year and shut down the fleet,” said Watson to the crowd. “Thank you to all for the support we have received from around the world, particularly Australia, to make this all possible.”

Watson also recently left comments on our article explaining why this campaign may be the most dangerous for the organization; calling out those who have made “unsubstantiated posts on issues they know little about.”

“My job is to say things people may not wish to hear, to do things that people may disagree with,” he wrote. “My job is to piss people off, to save as many lives as possible, to rock the boat and make waves. I’m not here to win popularity contests or the frigging Chevron Environmental Award. I’m not here to greenwash anything with false promises and sugar coated criticisms. I’m hear to make a difference and people may dispute the fact that I am or I am not. I don’t care, that is for history to judge.”

We’ll be updating with new information on the Sea Shepherd campaign throughout the season. The organization’s other defense vessel, the Ady Gil, will depart tomorrow from Hobart, Tasmania.

“Got any thing against whaling? Other than eco-socialist “feelings”, that is?”

I think his point was not that whaling is bad, but that the Japanese are being dishonest in claiming that the whales are being harvested for scientific research. They do a little scientific research as a pretense to technically abide by the International Whaling Commission’s moratorium on commercial whaling, but it is just a loophole that allows them to harvest these whales commercially for meat.

Well, lets hope they get their martyrdom wish then.

This is one where I disagree with both sides.

Just keep putting those patches and medals and monikers all over you Paul. Talk about a complex. ANd if you’re going to play pirates, be real pirates and not just little pussies.

And for the Japs, you’re lying about whaling for scientific purposes to get around whaling bans. We’re just supposed to be stupid idiots while you lie directly to our faces because you think we’re too dumb to see what you’re doing?

I'd like to use that Japanese harpoon cannon to harpoon that fat-ass whale named Algore in the name of scientific research.

Did you see the episode where they were lost in an ice-field with their puny 1" thick hull of a used ship.

Capt. Putz sends some fool down below to watch as the hull flexes to near breaking every time time it hits even the smallest iceberg.

The smallest of breaches would have meant the loss of life of everyone aboard.

...the Japanese were no where close with their iceberg designed 'fishing boats'.

I'm sure the Japanese wouldn't have heard their May-Day anyway.

I missed the episode with the icefield, but look forward to seeing it. I got a huge kick out of watching the stink bomb throwing “tryouts” for distance and accuracy. It reminded me of Lamar tossing the javelin in Revenge of the Nerds.

The show is pathetic and hilarious all at the same time. I can’t wait to see the new season!

Yeah! LOL I was holding my breath!

Guess I shouldn’t be so hateful, but I never could abide bullies.

Everyone on that ship deserves a Darwin Award.
