Yesterday, the Republicans unveiled their plan for energy independence. Here are some highlights.
Among the highlights: Nuclear power would be the battle horse, with a call to build 100 new reactors. The GOP plan takes aim at all the industrys hurdles. Long lead times and pricey components? Streamline nuclear licensing and slash import tariffs on nuclear components. Iffy economics? Give nuclear power tax credits like wind and solar power. Questions about waste storage? Revive and expand Yucca Mountain, and start reprocessing spent nuclear fuel.

why do we not now reprocess spent fuel?
Congressional law ...
Nuclear power should be brought up into production. The factory build concept is good, it will increase quality and safety.
You can thank Jimmuh Carter. Reprocessing can produce weapons grade plutonium. Carter banned reprocessing in a futile attempt to show our enemies that we weren’t interested in expanding our nuclear arsenal. He was a dottering old fool when he “served” as our President and he hasn’t gotten better with age.

Sarah is the answer.
Palin wants to do off shore drilling which helps because then at least we don’t import as much oil, but even Palin doesn’t resolve the main problem. How do we create a mass market alternative to gas from oil, if the oil companies refuse to do so.
How many AFL-CIO union guys would give their eye teeth for 100 Nuke PLants with tons of Overtime...
Cancel Carters agreement and do it
Look at Westinghouses AP1000 ready to go below, just get the darn NRC out of the way and rubber stamp them and get them built!!!
We have enough natural gas to last 100 hundred years.
Tell the freakin Saudi's to kiss our butts.
Chevy Volts charged by Nuke plants and running off natural gas will have us independent in 10 years if we put our mind to it!!!
Between oil, LPG and Methane Hydrates, we could very well be independent of all other producers.
We just need to start drilling.
New nuclear plants are a good idea. Fuel reprocessing is vital.
For disposal, I think the subduction zones are the way to go.
BTW, that was not to say we shouldn’t drill for more oil and gas domestically. That goes without saying!
yes but how do we get that natural gas into fuel into our cars?
The core requires water to keep from melting down, and the coolant becomes radioactive. All of the piping in the core becomes brittle over time, and of course also becomes radioactive, creating tremendously difficult maintenance and repair logistics.
I wouldn't invest a dime in any technology other than pebble bed. It uses gas cooling instead of liquid, much simpler design mechanically with no piping and valves to become brittle or fail. And best of all, physically incapable of melting down. If Three Mile Island had been a pebble bed reactor, we would have never had anything for the media and the tree huggers to latch on to.
Along with the new 100 nuclear power plants, let’s also build enough desalination capability that SoCal no longer needs Sacramento or Colorado river water! The South eastern part of the country could use a few as well. So long drought! And the case can be made that it is by far the best option for the....wait for it....environment!
The Rats are proposing a future of scarcity and rationing. I think an alternate vision of prosperity and abundance would easily win over the American voters, if only there was a party that would promote that option...
It wouldn't cost nearly that much if the utilities didn't have to fold in the costs they will incur for defending themselves in court from the wacko anti-nuke environmentalists. If the Republicans are serious about this legislation, they'll also make it nigh on impossible for the wackos to stall the work, and drive up the costs.
A big old AMEN to that!
AMEN.
