President Obama Makes Surprise Visit to Troops in Iraq - Video 4/7/09

Here is video of President Barack Obama making a surprise stop in Baghdad, Iraq on his way back from his trip that took him to Europe and Turkey. The video shows Obama greeting U.S. Troops at Camp Victory in Baghdad. Obama met with U.S. Gen. Ray Odierno and was also to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Interestingly, an Associated Press story on his remarks says Obama said:

"We spend a lot of time trying to get Afghanistan right, but I think it is important for people to know that there is still a lot of work to do here," Obama said.
Just what he means by that we do not know, since he has already decided to remove U.S. Combat Forces from Iraq in the next 18 months. What still needs to be done, and how will it get done if we are withdrawing from Iraq? . . . . (Watch Video)

Was listening to a news break on FM radio. The story was that Obama was “warmly received” by the troops. I don’t recall the news service on this station. Doesn’t matter, they are all part of the White House press office.

Bush made special trips to see the troops. This was just convenient for obama.

When President Bush went to Iraq for Thanksgiving that douche Jon Bon Jovi said it was just for a photo op. Is he saying that of Obama?

He only spoke with PM Maliki via phone. They said he couldn’t fly downtown because of a sandstorm.

I am sitting between BIAP and Liberty (Helicopter) Pad. There is no sandstorm and up until an hour ago helicopter traffic was normal.

“Warmly Received?” That is Flattering.. The Troops Looked like they had Guns held to their Heads. They looked like Prisoners held by Terrorists and Forced to Smile for the Cameras and They gave was Grimaces. That sure doesn’t qualify for a “Warm Reception” in this book:-)

My top of the hour radio news break (via AlJazeerABC) just said the troops cheered him “wildly” per Aaron Katersky’s report. I”ll be waiting for proof video showing the troops actual reaction.

The video that is at the link for this story does not show what I consider to be warm, enthusiastic or wildly cheering troops. They certainly don’t look all that happy to be there from the video I watched.

Probably had to give a pledge that they would cheer just to get within camera range.

A while ago I saw a video that showed the difference in the reception between when Bush arrived and when Obama arrived. The difference is wild. For Obama it was polite applause. For Bush it was wild applause.

The MSNBC "story" reeks of thought engineering. The narrative tells us in increasingly glowing accounts through the story of the "warm" then "stellar" then "wildly cheering" reception the chosen one received. We are also told that the reporter has divined that the troops feel "They are caretaking for the Iraqi government".

And just to show you how in tune they are with military matters, the talking head asks if he has handed out the "medal of valor awards yet".

Pardon me while I puke.

I didn’t here the speech myself, but a co-worker reports it this way:

He said something like “it’s time to give responsibility to Iraq law enforcement to Iraq...followed by what sounds to be cheers...

Then a second set where he says something like “it’s time to give responsibility to the Iraq military”...followed by more cheers...

But they were very strange sounding cheers. They started low and went high in unison. I wonder if they were not cheers at all (rather the opposite) but the news media listened and thought it sounded just enough like exuberant cheers to make a great newsbite as though the military was sucked in.
