DOD Ends Sale of Expended Military Brass to Remanufacturers
The Shootist ^ | 3/15/2009 | Gordon Hutchinson

We all wondered when it was going to start. When the new administration would make their move against us as gun owners. Oh, everyone got upset about HR45--I'll bet I got over 100 e-mails warning me about this draconian gun registration bill that had been introduced in Congress.

I was really glad to see Tom Gresham, host of "Gun Talk Radio," an editor, writer, television host on "Self-Defense TV," and one of the foremost gun spokespersons, come out and tell everyone to stop worrying about legislation so absolutely over-the-top--it would never get out of committee.

Tom said save your energy for when we really need it--don't expend it trying to warn everyone in your e-mail list about legislation that would go nowhere.

Now, Tom just interviewed me, and Larry Haynie, owner of Georgia Arms, on Gun Talk--and Tom agrees, now is the time to "...unleash the hounds..." by which he means start e-mailing and writing your senators and congressmen.

Now it has come clear...now we know what they intend to do.

It is an end-run around Congress. They don't need to try to ban guns--they don't need to fight a massive battle to attempt gun registration, or limit "assault" weapon sales.

Nope. All they have to do is limit the amount of ammunition available to the civilian market, and when bullets dry up, guns will be useless.

Think we jest?

Here is a copy of the letter sent to Georgia Arms just Thursday evening--effectively cancelling a contract he had to purchase 30,000 pounds of expended military brass in .223, 7.62mm, and .50 caliber:

Keeping them away from civilians is the only reason I can figure.

I am still shooting with brass I picked up at the military firing range forty years ago! .223, .45. .38 spl.

First in the Savage 110 FP
Then in the AR and Ruger.
Then in the Armalite 180,

Then in the AK-47/s as it throws the cases into a galaxy far far away.

Back in the Clinton years it was said the military was destroying all empty ammo cans. They are still on the market, but for how long?

Back in early 1968, I got lots of free casings at our military firing range, When Bobby Kennedy was shot new rules came in and all empties had to be accounted for. No more free brass.

How will this stupidly effect law enforcement ?

Not at all for the most part. They buy new ammo, with taxpayer money, some of it likely sent their way by the "Porkulus Bill".

Is there a way to come with a alternative to brass? High strength plastic perhaps

Both aluminum and steel work, if not quite as well. You can buy .223/5.56 in Wolf steel cased ammo and it'll run through your AR just fine.

Problem will be that Holder and Obama can easily cut of the supply of imported ammunition, with just a stroke of their pen, just like this action was.

I throw this out again as food for thought. Times are tough and money is tight, and any freepers who are wondering if there are any deals left might consider the following.

A good weapon, but so are these, and they are equally inexpensive.

VZ-24 Czech Made Mauser

M24/47 Yugoslav Mauser

Mosin-Nagant 91/30

Oh, and should you need to feed your AR or Mini-14:

.223 Federal 55Gr FMJ AE223BK. 1000 round case

From J&G Sales $429.90. Just added to the catalog on Friday, probably be sold out come Monday afternoon.

Or at Sportsman's Guide U.S. made FMJ .223 Ammo Current production. Brass-cased. Boxer-primed. Fully reloadable. 55-gr. full metal jacket bullet. Copper jacketed, lead core. Muzzle Velocity: 3,250 F.P.S

1,000 rounds (only, 500 rounds is sold out) $369.97.

I hadnt consider the thermal coefficient of brass

Not so much it's thermal coefficient, as it's heat capacity. It stores a lot of heat energy, which gets thrown down your shirt, or that of the shooter two spots down the line, when the case is ejected. :)

Never ceases to amaze me how that wayward casing can find its way to a lodging point directly between my safety glasses and my bare cheek.

What do you think of the CZ-82? I’ve seen those online for $200 or less.

The brass shell doesn't just hold the powder, it also takes away a lot of the excess heat.

A fact immediately apparent to anyone who catches a casing freshly-ejected from a semi-auto weapon, inside their shirt.

I don’t even own a .223 and this makes me want to buy some ammo. Sheesh. The F’ing gun grabbers just can’t get enough.

It may well become a trading commodity. Three rounds for a roll of toilet paper.

Three rounds for a roll of toilet paper.

Heck with that. I'll keep my rounds and use leaves.

Or, when they show up with tp in hand begging for ammunition, just point your operable weapon at them and say ‘the paper or your life...which is going to be?’

Living is going to be smooth and easy when we go beyond Thunderdome.

Hopefully, while threatening the tp bearers you will remember to use all the necessary words instead of skipping one like I just did. Add an ‘it’ to that last sentence.

I just got off the phone with a gentleman at the Second Amendment Foundation ,and he said they are going to check this out and see if they can get a definite conformation on this

He said his gut hunch was that its properly true. but anyway the ball is rolling on hopefully getting this overturned

I used a slightly modified version of the letter to the representative from “The Shootist” website and sent it to my representatives in North Carolina. I also called folks at the gun show in Charlotte on Saturday and broke the news. There is still (as of 10:00 AM EST) no reference to this on either the NRA-ILA or GOA websites and no email alerts have been sent out. I’ve sent both organizations emails asking what is going on but no response yet. Fortunately, I have my 20 year stock in the cabinet, and I don’t shoot those “sissy” rounds anyway :)

Eh, I'm not going to shoot anyone over TP. Enslave them, perhaps.

In honor of this thread, I just bought a few hundred bucks of Ammo from Natchez. They were OUT of pretty much any 9mm or 45acp except match quality or frangible. Even the variety of .223 was low.
