The UAW walked out on concession negotiations, according to an AP news source. They are willing to throw GM under the bus to protect their bloated benefit and pay packages. UAW wages and benefits are almost $30 per hour higher than the Japanese transplants. Unless the UAW realizes the gravity of the situation, GM and Chrysler will be forced into bankruptcy. That is a better alternative for the taxpayers. Then, the bloated UAW contract can be reduced by a judge. Have you ever seen a UAW contract? See a UAW contract here. It weighs 22 pounds. The UAW is not known for reason. A UAW organized plant(Magna New Process Gear plant) recently refused concessions even though the plant would be closed without them. They preferred unemployment to working under a reduced contract. The vote wasn't even close. The UAW rejected the concessions with 76% voting no.

“Then, the bloated UAW contract can be reduced by a judge.”
Not if Obama has anything to due with it.
**So many questions, so few answers.**
And being the answers will be coming from Congress, the Answers are going to be SILLIER than the Questions!!
It is my contention, being in the business of UI, that these Union Members caused their separation from employment, thus, according to UI Law they should be
disqualified from collecting benefits BUT the word has gone out to the Judges to pay them....it is disgusting.
>> Sadly I fear Congress will cave again.
Why in the world would you think *that*? That sort of behavior by our wise elected officials would be unprecedented. ;-)
But seriously: good post.
I thought that the UAW WAS the mafia.
This article is inaccurate...the UAW has agreed to the concessions...a deal was struck. It’s the bondholders who are refusing to budge...one of them is Citibank...bailedout bank. I word for GM, the announcement was made Friday about the Unions.
should read work for GM.
Your comment: “Sadly I fear Congress will cave again.”
You are unfortunately correct here. Dems have many ties to organized labor which will place them in the tough spot of going against public opinion when they vote to give in to the unions.
That surely didn’t bother them when they voted for a very unpopular stimulus package .
You guys are missing the point
Obama has the unions back they don’t need the big three auto makers to come to the table
The american taxpayer will pay the union demands
Good, return the favor and boot them out the door or close and move where the UAW isn't required. Why does GM have to use the UAW to build cars and trucks?
I hope I'm wrong, but it's looking like the excrement is going to hit the oscillator in about 18 months...and it won't be pretty.
BLOAT!

Wrongo. If GM goes bankrupt their entire retirement liability becomes the responsibility of the Federal Government. GM is probably trying to renegotiate their retirement funding liabilty and the union has decided it is better to saddle the feds with it. They have the feds in their back pocket they will get a better deal with them.
The union has absolutely no incentive to negotiate their contract down. They know the feds are going to step in in a big way. This is the same reason that banks are holding on to their defunct mortgages. Uncle Sam will pay more for them than they can get from a private investor.
The Congress knows that the UAW can deliver votes, Democrat Votes. The UAW Believes in socialism, the Taxpayers will support the Union contracts and lifestyle of the Local Officers. Bankruptcy, it aint gonna happen.
I called my boss. He says bondholders won’t budge on their money (more reasons to hate Citibank) so they have asked the the UAW to take more cuts in the retirement plan and start paying it now. Union say they can’t do it because the checks would stop-not enough cash...under the new conditions. Hopefully the government will appoint a car czar and deal with UAW and bondholders in a fair manner...everything else is a go.
Foot, quit moving so I can shoot you!

According to the Washington Post, bondholders are waiting to see if the UAW will give ant concessions. I guess everyone is playing a big game of chicken.

ant concessions=any concessions. Well...maybe it is ‘ant concessions’ with the UAW. Still sounds like the UAW is the holdup.
