Palin says she plans to travel to struggling villages

ANCHORAGE, Alaska-- Gov. Sarah Palin gave an update on her administration's efforts to help struggling villages in her first major news conference since the start of the Legislative Session.

The governor said again she's willing to travel to rural villages, but some villagers are wondering when that's going to happen.

Palin says members of her staff have taken a number of trips to the remote village of Emmonak, but at least one lawmaker has said he would like to see less talk and more action.

Palin laid out her plans to solve the crisis in western Alaska, which includes extending the moose hunting season, and expanding heating fuel assistance deliveries.

"People can have more of that healthy abundant protein that is out there," Palin said. "They can hunt, and that's a big darn deal. We need to remember the plight out there especially in western Alaska, did not happen over night so the solutions to these problems will not be found overnight either."

But Palin critic Rep. Jay Ramras, R-Fairbanks, says not enough is being done now.

"She kept referencing Emmonak and its 11 communities in western Alaska," Ramras said. "It's a lot deeper than Emmonak. I'd like to hear an action plan to get the food to western Alaska now."

This idiot Ramras , either a RINO or Palin enemy, needs to be taken down a notch or two. Also, the comments section could use a FREEP-ING

ramras is another one of those Republican RINOS who hate her. How about Ramras take his ass over there to try to help instead of sitting there and talking smack. What a loser. Geez Sarah has to take crap from both ends, Dems and RINO Republicans

Maybe this is the reason she doesn’t attend CPAC. When she sends her taped message out to CPAC. Right priorities.

Perhaps she could make a few obvious adaptations in Sam Kinison's commentary on Ethiopian famine and deliver that speech.

Ramras doesn’t even represent western Alaska. You don’t hear the legislators out there speaking up? Wonder why not? Could it be that the state is doing all it can under the law presently to help out?

That said, it might be a good idea for the governor to spend a half day or so and go there personally to investigate.

I just followed 3 links to end up at some blog about living in far flung W AK. I read an eye-opening account of "shopping day" out there and how it's an all day project, etc. She wrote the itemized list of groceries and I'm just floored.

Over $400 for what should be about $150 worth of groceries. For example, the box of 144 Huggies diapers cost her $82.55. That same box would cost me about $35 at the local BJ's and I live in Connecticut; not exactly cheapsville.

I may write to her and offer to buy and mail her the dang diapers. No way mailing costs 45 bucks. (Yet.) And "Ramras?" Boy, that's a name ripe for plucking. Jerk.

To clarify, when I wrote “should be” I didn’t mean prices “should be” the same in remote regions. I should have written “would be in the lower 48”.

My daughter lives in North Pole, AK not one of the struggling western villages, but I can tell you that those prices are typical. Take what we pay, double it and then some. We were there last year and couldn’t believe the prices. Also, they are still paying way more than we are for gasoline. It’s because EVERYTHING has to come by truck over the ALCAN highway or by ship. That adds a lot of $$$$ to the cost.

The point being, though, that the prices in the rural AK areas have ALWAYS been super high. This isn’t something that just developed, as Ramras and MSM would have you believe.

Hate to say it, but when you chose to live in the middle of nowhere, in a state with an extremely harsh winter, things get tough. Palin said in her press conference that the problems facing these villages didn’t just happen this winter, and solutions aren’t going to occur overnight. I’m betting that these villages go through somewhat the same thing every year, some worse than others, some better, but life is never easy. Palin did order the moose hunting season extended which seems to have help foodwise.

You have your politicians confused:

Jay Ramras has put together a coalition of churches and businesses who’ve collected and sent thousands of dollars of fuel and supplies to the some of the hardest hit villages.

Palin’s the one who’s been “sitting there and talking smack.”

The reason Palin’s got crap at both ends is because she’s so full of it, she’s leaking.

No offense, but Palin is toast. Yes, she is a true conservative, but she will never overcome the onslaught against her. She does not have the standing to frame her persona. She will never shake the redneck image, and that is sad. There is no possible way for her to overcome. I wish there was, but it is over for her.

You’re right - I neglected to say that. It’s just one of those things that have just now caught someone’s eye as a way to criticize someone’s job performance. I’m not sure what they expect ANY governor of ANY state to do to change food prices or any prices....

Some of the villages on the north slope get one delivery per year as soon as the ice breaks enough for barges to get through. The remainder of the year perishables and replenishment merchandise is flown in by the U.S. Postal Service at heavily subsidized rates. It still is very expensive.

“Yes, she is a true conservative, but she will never overcome the onslaught against her... She does not have the standing to frame her persona. There is no possible way for her to overcome.”

Seems they said the same thing about Reagan in the ‘70’s. He was just a “2-bit B movie actor” who was “stupid” to boot. I do disagree re:the standing. She absolutely has the standing to re-frame her persona....the media covers her non-stop. She can speak whenever/wherever she wants. She’s invited to events with all the “players.” She has plenty of opportunity.
