Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies

Since we had so much fun with the Military List. Plus, it’s Friday.

1. Star Wars The original 1977 theatrical, error-filled release only. Han did shoot first. The storm troopers did want the blast doors to be closed only to then want them re-opened. Darth did do the wagging finger gesture for no apparent reason after his speech in the war room to Tarkin was over. When I saw the movie when it came out I wanted a light saber so bad it hurt. I was 13. I could still find a use for one.

2. The Thing from Another World Original; the remake is excellent, too, but probably better classified as Horror; see below. If you have never seen this, you are in for a treat. I have seen this movie dozens of times, and each viewing I hear a new line I somehow missed before. This is one of those Rosalind Russell fast talking comedy dramas. It’s hard to keep up. Dr Carrington’s motivations are natural, believable, and consistent throughout. The only, very minor, jarring point is when Scotty faints at the end, when he had been on Okinawa during the end of World War II. Anybody who made it through that would not pass out when seeing a vegetable cook. This movie does not follow the now usual conventions and will surprise you. You also have to keep in mind that this came out at the height of the Great Saucer Scare.

3. The Day the Earth Stood Still. The original!...

Galaxy Quest Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan

Those were definitely 2 of the 3 best Star Trek movies ever made.

Oh, ouch. You wound me. In fact, I had to retire to the bathroom to weep.

Beyond hope! What a sad fate awaits me.

Yes, I have the Criterion Collection DVD. Great stuff. It was directed by the great Byron Haskin, who also did many classic The Outer Limits episodes.

“The Thing” from 1951.

I rather like the John Carpenter version with Kurt Russell.
For my money, it is as well directed and as creepy as Ridley Scott's "Alien".

Star Trek - The Voyage Home was the best.... (in my opinion)

I must add Buckaroo Banzi.. John Lithgow was so cool in that one....

"I can't figure out why people can't figure out why the "water" thing is perfectly acceptable in SIGNS..... We see they can survive in our atmosphere..."

That's one I can't figure out. Our atmosphere is full of water. Usually about ~60% humidity in temperate zones. Why didn't the humidty in our atmosphere corrode their skins and destroy their innards when they breathed it?
Imagine standing on a planet yourself where the atmosphere has microscopic particles of hydrochloric acid suspended in it. You breathe it and are bathed in it constantly. Ouch!

Good add, but I think Richard Dean Anderson in the series is a better Jack O’Neill than Kurt Russell (although I like Russell, too...)

My taste buds says it beats the crap out of spoon-fed plots such as 'Star Trek 2: The Wrath of KHAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNN (Don't forget to shake your fist)!!!!'

As far as Star Trek goes my favorite was VI: The Undiscovered Country. Of course I enjoy Christopher Plummer's work better than "Mr. Roarke" so that might have something to do with it.

I hardly agree with this guy...but to each his own!

The original War of the Worlds is probably my all time favorite. Close Encounters may be the best of all sci-fi movies. The most scary was The Blob (scared me out of my wits when I was about seven and have never forgotten it!)

2001 made no sense, but a lot of sci-fi doesn’t really. I saw it when it was released, and it was AWESOME.

Alien was great, Aliens was better.

Some of my personal favorites are Silent Running, Andromeda Strain, The Abyss, The Explorers (a kids movie but still great sci-fi), and Rollerball. For sci-fi disaster movies....Deep Impact.

BTW- from the article My official probabilistic estimate is that any remake has a 99.9% chance of sucking..Now that I'll agree with!

Incomplete...
Where is “Plan X From Outer Space”?,,,or “The Attack of The Killer Tomatos” (John Astin is the BEST mad scientist)!
Where’s Rollerball?

My favorite sci-fi movie of all time is Serenity. Firefly was the best sci-fi tv series.

Number 1 should be “The Thing” (Original). It holds up very well after all these years. The dialogue was terrific. Those characters spoke the way real conversations go; that is, they talk over one another. I’ve got the DVD and will watch it from time-to-time. It always impresses me. As a kid it scared the crap out of me for at least a couple of weeks. I also think that “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers” should be in the top five. And no, it wasn’t about the excesses of the McCarthy era or communism. It was just a great story made into an excellent movie. Another movie I liked was “The Man From Planet X”. It was so bad it was good. It had that really creepy egg head alien in that funky spaceship (not a saucer) that landed in Scotland. The alien looked like his face had been painted white.

Remove “Highlander”.
Great movie, but not science fiction.
More fantasy, than anything else.

Remove “Escape From New York”.
Great fiction, but no “science”.

Add “Forbidden Planet”.
Ground breaking.
Space travel.
Amazing alien world.
Amazing science.
Robots.

And Anne Francis. :P
