None of this is taught in the history books in the north..You have to take the time and effort and dig deep to find this.
Yes it is truly amazing what one finds when one does their own research and forms their opinion on the facts and not the filter of another natural biases.
I am fortunate enough(or is it misfortune)to hear stories passed on from family members who actually lived through this era. One such story on my father's side was the family livestock was confiscated as contraband by Grant's army. My great great great grandfather and his brothers pleaded for their return but were denied. The mules, vital to put break ground after winter, the four brothers snuck into the Union camp to "steal back" their animals. Two got caught and were swiftly hanged for their efforts.
The irony of it all was they were tobacco growers and hated the cotton planters and were pro-union until this happened
So history isn't dry recitation of events long ago to people unknown but very personal to me and my family. And when persons like Non -Sequator make idiotic comments about the South and belittle it's suffering after the war, i go ballistic. I admit the cause which the South fought wasn't worth the blood spilled and the agony inflicted. However that wasn't the only reason and there were many others and to gloss over them does an injustice to all those who fought and died.
History isn't as cut and dried as Non-Sequitur would like to believe.

sorry to hear about your ancestors and I too agree with what you said. I've spoken to people who had family what had their land taken away. One old woman told me about here great great great grand other who was raped by union soldiers and how their farm was ransacked. One old guy ion ;A told me how his ancestors were not allowed to vote for 10 years but blacks were. the north had this great idea of putting ex slaves in charge of the general public and gave guns to the slaves to keep power. Nah was never going to be hostility was there what idiots thought of that? Then they had this great idea after to go south and wipe the Indians out not forgetting to use the buffalo soldiers out west. A Cherokee told me just recently flag comes of age, goes against the crown and they are not traitors, the flag then comes south and rapes kills, robs. The flag then goes out west to kill, rape, rob. But it is the battle flag which is not even a Govt flag which causes concern to the NAACP, liberals and those too lazy to find out about history. course to listen to non squ on here it is the south who deserves everything but really had nothing bad done to it.

I, like you had a great, great, great Grandfather who was pro-Union until the Army of US Grant came through and took everything that waist nailed down, then burned everything else.
He had flown the US flag every day to show his support for the US. He had three sons who wore the CSA Gray, but had one son who wore US blue. His grandfather had fought with George Washington and his Father had fought with Andy Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.
He hated the Yankees every day after that day. He joined up with Gen. Roddy's CMD under Gen. Forrest and then later refused to take the oat after the War had ended. He stated that he would never be Reconstructed!
These stories and others were told to my Father and to my Mother as well. We are of Irish and Dutch ancestry and have a VERY long memory.
I have had discussions with Non-Sequitor for years and hoped that I would never see that name again. You can't discuss nothing with her(?), it's like talking to a brick wall.
I have been gone for the last four years for surgeries and recovery and am I glad to be back here at FR again.
