Purchasing a Handgun (Vanity)

Posted on 11/28/2008 2:53:47 PM PST by DeuceTraveler

My wife and I are looking to purchase a handgun for both hobby shooting and home defense. We are only looking to purchase one. The local gun store has the following handguns that interested me and I wanted to see if anyone had any personal experiences with them. The review sites seemed bias towards one company versus others.

1.) Beretta 96 series 2.) Bersa Thunder and Thunder 380 3.) Ruger 9mm model SR 4.) Sig P226 5.) Glock M30 6.) Taurus PT-92

Thanks in advance!

I went for a revolver because of reliability, I don’t want a jam in a jam, so to speak. Also, the short barrel is less accurate than the longer one, but for home defense distance is not a consideration.

CCW was a consideration when I bought it, it is definitely smaller; I have hollow point and regular ammunition both, and I generally practice with the regular (cheaper).

I also have a 12 ga shotgun, but with rheumatoid arthritis, it’s harder to handle than the revolver and I can only hip shoot with it anyway. :D

That plus two dogs (click on my screen name) and I feel pretty secure out in the boonies. Heh. Everyone I know out here has decent home defense.

Oh you’ve done it now. You called a magazine a “clip”.

Saiga 12 shotgun

The Saiga 410 is awesome for home defense as well in 000 buck.

Thats 5 .30 cal balls headed yer way per shot. But .410 rds are expensive

Knew a guy who had to point guns at people, but didn't want to have to shoot. He was a big fan of pimped out chrome .44 magnum revolvers. He said that the large bore, bling chrome really penetrated the low watt intellects he was dealing with. His target service base was one that respected big, garish, chrome.

If anyone goes to Vegas, this is a nice place to spend a few hours.

Nice thing about the saiga 410 with buckshot is that women can control it without problem.

Drawbacks are the saiga 410 is finicky about what it shoots and ammo is expensive.

The saiga 12 solves all these issues except making them easy on women ;) But it pretty mild on the shoulder

My wife and I recently purchase handguns for sport and home defense. I chose the Springfield XDm in 9mm and my wife chose the Walther P99 in 9mm mainly for its weight, balance and fit to her grip. I looked at both Sig and Taurus but I found the Springfield to be much more to my liking and ideal for my needs.

I like the Kel-Tec 9MM. It’s small and concealable and if 9MM doesn’t pack enough punch for you, you can get it in .40 cal. I bought mine used and experienced “nosedive” jams when I test fired it, but a new clip took care of that. Strictly double action and no safety, but the trigger pull is long enough that by the time it’s pulled back far enough to fire, it’s no accident.

I like the Keltec as well.

This is the ultimate in summer carry. With the pocket clip you dont even need a holster.

Draw backs? DA only and a long trigger pull plus smallish handfill lead to inaccuracy.
nothing wrong with the gun beside the DA action only, but small guns tend to swim in yer hand leading to inaccuracy.

A good pistol for summer carry or deep back up

I’m thinking of the .380

Keltec makes a 40 SW?

Important point. If you’re going to share the sidearm, make sure it fits her hand. My wife’s preference is 1911>Sig 226>Glock.

Agreed. Ruger makes very good guns. They are not SIGs but Rugers are like pickup trucks. They are not always pretty, reliable as hell and a bargain for the price. I have an old P85 9 mm and i can tell you Ruger semi-autos work every time. Any type of 9 mm ammo even bad reloads. Ruger’s never had any rust issues that SIGs had.

i am checking out the new Ruger SR9 carry (nice) 9mm, the newish Beretta 9 mm which can be a carry gun or an XD or even an FN.

How accurate is the Storm? I was considering a 9mm. the bigger Beretta FS92 is not a good CCW gun but it is so accurate. Beretta makes great guns - they have been for about 500 years. One of the oldest companies I am aware of.
