Another is to plant overly optimistic stories supposedly gleaned from “insiders”. This is an example of the last kind. Dupray has been falling for all of these recently.

do you mean Obama's team is purposely planting stories about a McCain landslide? i don't buy that... that would be one of the stupidest things they could do... hinting at a McCain landslide does not suppress the vote... it's more likely to energize the GOP... more likely to get the GOP out to vote... especially when the media is pouring doom and gloom on McCain...

Yes, stories that McCain is going to win in NJ, for example. When it comes out that McCain is losing NJ handily on election day, that will dispirit his voters.

The truth is that is will be close, down to the wire, and will depend in large part on the GOP getting out and voting in heavy numbers. Any message that states otherwise interferes with the GOP's interest.

Yes, I agree. And according to the gnomic "ObiWan" at NRO's The Corner, A late shift toward McCain is the Obama campaign's worst nightmare:

Obi Wan: "Believe me, there is someone in the Obama campaign who is deathly afraid of the 'McCain pulls even or goes ahead' poll."... "That Obama strategist knows how much depends on the whole Chuck Schumer and Rahm Emanuel approach —.work with the media to demoralize conservatives, and keep the perception of a juggernaut going. But a day or two of a few bad polls, and that strategy backfires. The conservatives know they've still got a shot at this."
I can't see how news that we are closing dramatically would make conservative voters complacent. We're like a basketball team that's been down 20, but now stands one 3 pointer away from taking the lead. The closer we are the more excited we get. No one's going to back off now. News like this will likely increase republican turn out, not dampen it. But dampening turnout is the other side's strategy.
