I always thought they were legit. When a site puts someone’s comments in quotes, they have made a tape IMHO.

I think they were planning to get him elected and then challenge the Constitution.
This does explain why he visited Pakistan in 1981 when Pakistan was on the forbidden list for Americans to visit except as a Government official. Also in 1981 you had to be Muslim to be admitted into Pakistan.
