My mother died at 85. In the years prior to her death, she had dementia - bad enough that we couldn’t keep her in our house, since she sometimes became violent.
However, my wife & I took her out 2-3 times a week to eat and shop. Our youngest daughter saw her all the time. We just had to be on the watch for increasing temper.
If nothing else, when he went to Hawaii, Obama SHOULD have spent a fair bit of time with his grandmother. Instead, he spent about an hour, with campaign aides - NOT his family.
