McCain's October Surprise for Obama Coming This Weekend?
The Patriot Room ^ | October 3, 2008 | Bill Dupray

Posted on 10/03/2008 5:07:19 AM PDT by Bill Dupray

Everybody on the right is itching for McCain to destroy Obama and the Democrat Congress on this Fannie and Freddie scandal. There is the explosive video seen more than 1 million times on YouTube showing exactly how the Democrats are solely responsible for this mess. Here is a damning video showing Democrats from a couple years ago saying that everything was fine and dandy with Fannie and Freddie while Republicans and regulators pleaded for reform and oversight. Here is Bill O'Reilly from last night absolutely losing his mind yelling at Barney Frank for trying to cover this up.

Even Britt Hume and Charles Krauthammer after the debate last night were baffled at why McCain has not gone after such an easy target.

It is a grenade sitting in the middle of the Democrat Party waiting for McCain to pull the pin. Ace thinks McCain will pull that pin, just not yet. I think he is dead on the money.

Here is the strategy . . .

Second debate will focus on the economy --first was supposed to be foreign affairs

Too late. You only get one time to make a good first impression. Yes the first debate was supposed to be about foreign affairs, but the first 30 minutes were spent on the economy. Why? Because it was a national crisis--so much so that McCain suspended his campaign and flew back to Washington hinting that he might have to postpone the first debate. The public tuned in to hear McCain's ideas about the economy and how we got into this financial mess. Instead, he focussed on earmarks while Obama hit the Bush administration and Wall Street hard blaming them for the mess. McCain responded briefly by attacking Wall Street as well and then concentrated on earmarks.

With all of the early voting underway, McCain lost an opportunity to explain Obama's associations with the financial mess and how the Dems dropped the ball. McCain didn't even toot his own horn when it came to the bill he introduced in 2005 to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. McCain was MIA and the polls went into a nosedive. This could be the tipping point of the election barring some major personal revelation on Obama. The public now believes Obama and the Dems are best suited to handle the economy and many have already voted.

Actually Palin did a good job of distancing McCain from the Bush administration. She did it repeatedly, perhaps overusing the word maverick. I thought she was particularly effective against Biden chastizing him for finger pointing and going back into the past instead of looking to the future and telling the American people what they will do for them now and in the future.

I’m not holding my breath. McCain should have using this since the revelations were made about Dem complicity. As much as I wished many people were watching O’Reilly hammer Frank, FOX does not get nearly the ratings of the alphabet networks. We’ll see. Palin alluded to Dem complicity in the debate last night, but didn’t follow up. This is the issue that could carry the Pubbies into the White House. If McCain is smart enough.

Most of them are, but Obama has developed a tremendous ground game to get out the vote, the product of a highly contested primary that reached every state forcing Obama to develop networks around the country to register voters. In VA, Obama has set up offices in all 52 counties. They have made a tremendous effort to get out the vote, including voting early. This is going under the radar in many places. Obama’s people are on the college campuses getting out the vote in places like VA, Ohio, Colorado and Nevada.

Hooray Bill O’Reilly! Barney Frank, the arrogant elitist, deserved the pummeling O’Reilly provided. He lit him up. More people need to light up this “coward”.

You only get one chance to make a good first impression. McCain blew it.

Like Reagan in 84 and George Bush in 2000 and 2004, I guess.

No like Bob Dole in 1996 and Bush 41 in 1992.

Over three quarters of voters still vote in the traditional manner. That’s still the most bang for your buck.

It’s a catch 22. Either the Dems kill the bill and American is SAVED from this abomination — and McCain loses the election, or the bill passes, we each cough up our $5,800 to Wall Street elitists, and John McCain comes out swinging and might win the election. Awful situation.

The statement of yours that I cited was made in absolute terms. For it to be true it would have to be true in every case, not just in some cases. One exception falsifies it, and I mentioned three.

In a close election, a few percent or less can make a big difference. For example, in 2000, Bush lost WI by 5,708 votes and in 2004 by 11,384. And of course there was FL in 2000.

And the so called "undecideds" that you're trying to appeal to aren't early voters.

We'll have to agree to disagree, but I feel you have to save your best stuff for last. Look at the DUI report the Friday before the election in 2000. It made a huge difference.

In 2000 early voting was not as high as it is today. Again, Obama’s strength is his ground game. He has the money and organization to turn out the vote. He beat the Clintons.

Using the word maverick may not be clear enough for most of the voting public. Indeed, I'd venture to say that most of the voting public would not understand what this means within the context of John McCain. If it's true that newspapers are written for a 12 year old comprehension level, I think TV should be aimed no higher, and perhaps lower. This means Palin and McCain both need to come out and say clearly:

The McCain-Palin policies represent a break in the business-as-usual method of running government in Washington. We recognize the blunders of the Bush policies and we have learned from them. We bring to the table a fresh start with polcies that lead us away from past errors into a new era of peace and economic growth and stability.

or something like that. The break with Bush must be clear and clean, regardless of how you feel about Bush's policies. Perception will be everything in this election.

No, as it is in most elections, turnout will be everything.

You still have to focus on the 75%. The early voters are the folks who have known who they're voting for since June anyway. Do you have any real proof that the early vote totals differ from the votes cast on election day?

It must be tough being scared of everything.

Methinks the "October Surprise", as is customary, won't be coming from the Republican side.

Why break with such a long-standing electoral tradition?
