Top Ten Rock & Roll Bands?
Posted on 07/27/2008 3:26:41 PM PDT by Bobarian
Okay, FRiends. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon and I need a distraction from Obamamania. Anybody care to debate the top ten rock & roll bands?
Not necessarily personal favorites, but in terms of influence, endurance and popularity.
I think the top four, in no particular order, would have to include:
The Doors
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin

Not-even-close. Frankenstein was art. Hocus Pocus was schmaltz. Well, artistic merit aside, I'm just sayin' I always got the two tunes confused.

So much from so little. I see Black Sabbath mentioned a few times, too. It doesn’t get simpler than that. Yet I can listen to Fairies wear boots or sweet leaf for the ten-thousandth time and it is still good.

Absolutely.
Spin magazine listed The Ramones as the number 2 all-time greatest band, behind only The Beatles.
I can’t argue with that.
They were THAT great.

These things need some time reference. I mean at one point I listened to Boston all day everyday. Some Chicago - can't stand them now. Doobie Brothers - ok now but not in the rack in the Tahoe. Now it's hard and metal. Metallica is by far the most influential band I can think of since 1980, But Hootie and the Blowfish had a run. Even Creed changed and probably saved rock from Brittany. When my kids listened to tenny music I would listen to Boys to Men - not a lick of their stuff in the house or car now but at the time it was interesting.
One point though always have and always will hate the Beatles.

When the Ramones first went to England Sid Vicious- who had not formed a band yet- tried to get in back stage and was scared that the Ramones where going to beat him up, that they were a gang. Hilarious.

the thing that the music critics never got was that it was socialism and the collectivist thinking that eventually led to Carter's "malaise" speech that started the punk movement. They (and when I say they I actually mean we) were reacting to that anti-individualist fashion trend by being ultra-individualist.
The fact that punk will probably make a come back may be the one good thing about an Obama victory.

Isn't Sweet Leaf technically Ozzy?
Don't think anyone has mentioned Deep Purple yet.
Guns-n-Roses, anyone?
