Okay, FRiends. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon and I need a distraction from Obamamania. Anybody care to debate the top ten rock & roll bands?
Not necessarily personal favorites, but in terms of influence, endurance and popularity.
I think the top four, in no particular order, would have to include:
The Doors
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Ah, I see, thank you for your clarification. Indeed, a heavy, repetitive bassline became the foundation for a wide range of prog, psych and krautrock as well. Holger Czukay of Can, oftentimes referred to as the greatest bassist ever, has cited the Velvets as one of his influences.
Which brings me to a question. Who was the first Psychedelic band? Since it is before my time, I don’t know that much about the era.
I think most people consider that to be The Beatles, seeing that “Tomorrow Never Knows” was released, on the Revolver album, in 1966.
Rush is an absolutely amazing band. That just three members can make such incredible music is a testament to their abilities. And Niel Peart is just unbelievable.
Hmmm, I guess that makes sense. By the summer of love(67) wasn’t there a bunch of Psych bands? If so, that would be an incredible immediate influence on music.
Rush, Metallica, White Zombie, Motörhead, Kiss, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, AC-Dc, just to name a few. There are far more than 10 greatest.
I know I was surprised hearing them live for the first time and going “they sound just like the album”. (Of course, hearing a song way different from the album is a lot of fun - ala Jimmy Buffett).
Years later I learned that they use a lot of digital “samples” that are triggered by foot pedals, etc. Obviously that takes a lot of talent too (hitting the right one, turning it off at the right moment, etc.) - but it took some of the mystery and magic out of it. Even without that stuff they are amazing live (some of their instrumentals are pure jamming). Was lucky enough to see them twice this tour. I hope it’s not the last.
Creedence Clearwater Revival; The Doors; Led Zeppelin; The Cars (Short list but damned good); AC/DC; The Grateful Dead; U2; Metallica; Nirvana; Alice in Chains.
A lot more you could make a good case for...I didn't include the beatles or the rolling stones because they have been way overexposed. These days the opening of any of their tunes is cause for immediately changing the station.
I'd kill to see them put Marino's 'Loved by You' on the next release of 'Guitar Hero' just to watch the little wannabe's melt trying to keep up with it...same for Ritchie Blackmore when he on a tear like 'Kill the King'.
DIRE STRAITS! Mark Knopfler rocks!
Bands, not acts, right?
You’d have to include: Eagles, Pink Floyd, Beatles and Queen.
My personal favorites include those bands above, plus Styx and Kiss...though I don’t know if they would be included in a definitive “Top 10”. The other four should, though.
Saw a concert at the Oakland Colisseum where Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush opened, AC/DC was second, and then I should have left because Steven Tyler was so wasted he forgot half the lyrics (Aerosmith) and Ted Nugent closed rthe bill. He came out in a leopard print leotard, need I say more.
Frank Marino was awesome!
Ah yes, Genesis
I was just listening to 'Loved by You' on You Tube...best guitarist no one has ever heard of...

With the Grateful Dead its par for the course...lol
To put the Beatles down is downright, well, won't say it...
