Top Ten Rock & Roll Bands?

Posted on 07/27/2008 3:26:41 PM PDT by Bobarian

Okay, FRiends. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon and I need a distraction from Obamamania. Anybody care to debate the top ten rock & roll bands?

Not necessarily personal favorites, but in terms of influence, endurance and popularity.

I think the top four, in no particular order, would have to include:

The Doors
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin

I just recently went to youtube and listened to the Velvet Underground for the first time. I can hear how the whole punk scene blossomed from their droning sound.

I don't really consider Zappa as rock & roll. Frank invented his own genre; few artists can do that. But not many can approach its statistical density in its basic form.

"Statistical Density" is what I named Zappa's genre on my Dudebox, to keep the spousal unit from punching it up randomly.

Speaking of Bob Dylan, I have his first album still sealed in absolutely perfect condition. Is there any way to tell without opening the album if it is a first pressing or not?

Anyone know the answer to this one definitively?

Personally I like the Del Vikings and Orioles and the Platters...but they don’t make this list.

Well, on YouTube it may indeed sound like a 'droning sound' but there's a whole lot of innovative musicianship going on there that may be lost in the low-fi  YouTube medium.  Many modern artists from a wide variety of styles and backgrounds have cited them as being highly influential.

As to Punk being "droning", well, I suppose it's a matter of taste and perspective   :-)

No mention of Def Leppard yet? Pyromania and Hysteria were two huge albums.

What I mean by the droning sound is as one of the members of the VU said in an interview. They were the first to write songs with a constant unrellenting droning sound as the underlying drive of the song.

I wish I could answer that for you, but I don't know. Sounds like a keeper though.

Knew a cousin of his wife’s back in early 80’s who gave us some background insight in some of his then current songs.

Type of guy I’d like to hang with I think.

“Statistical Density” = reference to ‘The Black Page’ IIRC. Spoken on ‘Live in New York’ I think. Get down with your bad self!

““Yes” is one of my favorites.”

Steve Howe Yes, or Rabin Yes?

There’s no denying that The Dolls, The Stooges. The MC5 and the Velvets contributed heavily to what would become punk rock.

They were all big influences on The Ramones who practically invented it. IMHO, punk began the night in 1974 when The Ramones played their first gig at CBGB’s.

If we get into influences and who’s sound contributed to the mix of music that led to the genre, we could retrace the whole of music indefinitely.

The last real original music was probably composed by Ugg using a rock and a stick 20,000 years ago.

“Rush possesses 24 gold records and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records. These statistics place Rush fifth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold and platinum albums by a rock band.”

Also - in 2007 they ranked number 14 in sales for their Snakes & Arrows tour, with an average ticket price of $60 or something. Not bad for three “old guys” that have been together for 34 years. In fact - I think their playing live together is better than ever.

And although my other personal favorite band is Emerson, Lake and Palmer - not sure they could by any stretch be figured into the top ten.
