Top Ten Rock & Roll Bands?
Posted on 07/27/2008 3:26:41 PM PDT by Bobarian
Okay, FRiends. It's a lazy Sunday afternoon and I need a distraction from Obamamania. Anybody care to debate the top ten rock & roll bands?
Not necessarily personal favorites, but in terms of influence, endurance and popularity.
I think the top four, in no particular order, would have to include:
The Doors
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin

When the Ramones first went to England Sid Vicious- who had not formed a band yet- tried to get in back stage and was scared that the Ramones where going to beat him up, that they were a gang. Hilarious. The Ramones blazed the trail, the Pistols refined it. Unique, cataclysmic guitar sound that inspired legions of musicians and set the Brit music scene on fire. I was working in an imports-only specialty record shop in the late 1970's, and we had a CONSTANT stream of Hendrix, Zep and Stones fans who would be coming in wanting Pistols records for the incredible guitar sound.

Rock was basically dead and the Ramones came out with high, aggressive energy. Rock in Roll radio sums it up the times...

“Do You Remember Rock N Roll Radio?”
Rock’n, rock’n’roll radio Let’s go
Rock’n, rock’n’roll radio Let’s go
Rock’n, rock’n’roll radio Let’s go
Rock’n, rock’n’roll radio Let’s go
Do you remember Hullabaloo,
Upbeat, Shinding and Ed Sullivan too?
Do you remember rock’n’roll radio?
Do you remember rock’n’roll radio?
Do you remember Murray the K,
Alan Freed, and high energy?
It’s the end, the end of the 70’s
It’s the end, the end of the century
Do you remember lying in bed
With your covers pulled up over your head?
Radio playin’ so no one can see
We need change, we need it fast
Before rock’s just part of the past
‘Cause lately it all sounds the same to me
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh
Will you remember Jerry Lee,
John Lennon, T. Rex and OI Moulty?
It’s the end, the end of the 70’s
It’s the end, the end of the century

Van Halen, right on. But you have to qualify that: Diamond Dave or Sammy Hagar?

. . . wanting Pistols records for the incredible guitar sound. "Problems" has some of the most incredible guitar sounds I've ever heard. It rocks like almost nothing I've ever heard.
If they had the good sense to keep Glen Matlock in the band, they could have lasted years and done great things.

GNR should be up there. It's a shame what Axl did to the band.
You should read Slash’s book. Brutally honest look into the group.

Lou Reed is the “ Godfather “ of punk . The Stooges and MC5 were the first “ punk “ bands .

Rock was basically dead and the Ramones came out with high, aggressive energy. I'm of the opinion that The Ramones saved rock n roll and defined it at the same time.
Rock n roll was less than 20 years old when they started. It had branched into several directions after The Beatles split, none of which was really true to the spirit of rock n roll as it exploded onto the music scene in the mid 50s.
The Ramones brought that back, added some of their own style, and launched a movement that changed rock n roll forever.

The best three-chord kick-ass full-tilt rock band ever. And I truly mean that as a compliment.
