Do you think the smattering of lights in the background are more Christmas tree lights? It's hard to tell in a black and white photo.

It is rather hard to tell, but they do seem to go up in a pyramid shape like tree lights would.
Figured I would visit the websites for both ‘The Honolulu Advertiser” and “The Honolulu Star - Bulletin” because of the ‘holiday’ there and stumbled upon some rumblings in the comment section about Punahou alumni and a Bobby Titcomb. I clicked on a link to Punahou.edu and came across the following which is interesting in regards to the picture in question, found at the following url:
http://www.punahou.edu/page.cfm?p=601
and the information is mention of leis piled around graduating students necks.
“At the Neal Blaisdell Center in June, Obama graduated with 411 classmates from the Punahou Class of 1979. Orme recalls the two friends standing next to one another, barely able to see over the stacks of lei around their necks. At that moment, amid the jubilation, neither one could have imagined how differently their paths would unfold.”
This would lend credence to the picture being taken of Obama Sr at his graduation. Also taking the picture of Obama Sr from 1959 and placing it beside a lightened picture of the graduation picture, Obama Sr has a fuller face and appears to be 3 years older FWIW.
Still haven’t found what was alluded to in the comments section of the Star - Bulletin re Bobby Titcomb but noticed another story about Obama spending four hours with Titcomb today! Four hours with a classmate and only one with Granny Dunham. Talk about misplaced priorities!
