not to me he doesn’t...but he could be related to the fellow he is smiling at. The image, identified (loosely) as a graduation ‘do’ for obama snr., is supposedly taken prior to his departure from Hawaii to the US; it’s odd that the ages of the ‘fellow students’ appear to vary so much.

If that were to be correct, then obama would already have been born. Remember, obama snr left for the US when the boy was just over a year old.

In an earlier comment there was the suggestion that Stanley Dunham arrived in Hawaii some time before his family. Did Stanley know obama snr prior to obama snr meeting Stanleys daughter?

We cannot trust image captions.

Isn’t it the Hawaiian custom to present lei on arrival? If he is leaving, would he be wearing flowers? And...if it is a gathering of graduates, why would obama snr be the only one with lei? He appears to be the ‘guest of honour’...

Methinks it’s more likely to be a welcome than a farewell - and that would place it to before obama was born.

Thoughts?

Yes it is the custom.

Yes, I agree that it is a welcome. "Thoughts?

My thoughts are that it could have been taken when Barack Sr. arrivded in 1971. That Stanley Dunham brought his grandson (who I think the boy in the front looks like) to greet him, and that is why they are both in the picture. Look at the suit Barack Sr. is wearing. It is the same one he is wearing in the picture of him and Barack Jr. If those lei's weren't covering up Barack Obama Sr's tie I bet it is the same as the one he is wearing in that picture also. Maybe Ann took this group picture. I think the picture of Barack Sr. and Barack Jr. at Christmas is when Senior was leaving after that trip.

These are just my thoughts and I am going to stick to them, even if it isn't so, it makes it interesting. :-)
