We just got a Mac and I can't figure this thing out...HELP
Eric Blair

The MAC was supposed to be better than a PC.

Does anybody out there know how to use this thing?

Nobody has yet been able to explain how to open up a link in separate window however.

No sure what you mean, but if you go to the Menu Bar at the top of the screen while in your Browser, click and hold, you should see an item called New Window. Click that and a new Browser window appears to surf around in.

Eric,

As others mentioned, it may help to read the little guides that came with your iMac.

If you plug a standard 2-button USB mouse into the Mac or configure the mouse that you have, you should be able to get the right and left buttons to work pretty much like they do in Windows (at which point you can right-click the link and select “Open Link in New Window”). I believe Free Republic has a configuration option to change that behavior for this site. Have you logged in?

My advice: Throw it out the window. It’s a nightmare that never ends!

Hey! He looks just like my Malinois buddy, Shadow!

My Malinois girl, Hanna, is the one who tries to keep him from getting up on the other side of the bed. She considers the underside of the bed her “turf”

The two of them really have an interesting set of rules about who is the boss of the house, and who is the boss of the acreage.

The one thing they truly understand is that I am the “alpha”, unless there are bad guys on the premises.

Did you know that “crows” qualify as “bad guys”, deserving of ear-splitting non-stop barks?

You have a wonderful and perfect representative of the best of the breed!

I am serious! There are so many wonderful Mals out there, doing great jobs, but you have a beautiful dog there! He/she is absolutely the max!

I hesitate to ask which kennel is responsible for that breeding, but I have an inkling. Our dogs might be related.

E-mail me privately if you hesitate to post openly. You know why...

Sorry, it is very bad manners to mess up the thread. And, I am so sorry for doing so.

But, that is one magnificent Belgian Malinois. See the photo, and know that while this breed isn’t for everyone, it really is the “Mac” of dogs.

Only those who know this breed will get my “ken”. The rest of you, don’t worry about it.

Ask AlGore. Isn't he on the Board of Directors of Apple Corp? Are you going to start wearing sandals, eating Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and hanging with Ed Begley Jr?

BTW....how was your Earth Day celebration?

No really, I just thought you might like to see a picture of a Malinois so I did an images.google.com

I had never heard of the breed and wanted to see what they looked like. I would probably still mix them up with German Shepherds! Although I should know better now.

But I am your basic dog lover and thought it quite humorous that you find yourself sandwiched between two while your husband gets the couch.

So, if you want, you can go to this website. It's where I got the picture.

Malinois

But don't ask me to tell you how to get it to show up in a new window. : )

gimme a break, polwit.

We started using Macs in our business before AlGore even knew what the Internet was, and I am “series”.

I could give a flying rip who tries to “get linked” with a good thing. AlGore is just a pathetic “hanger-on”, who probably can’t even figure out Safari, without his kids’ help.

Didn’tya hear?

Julie Nixon Eisenhower just endorsed Obama today!

Freepers don’t get their gudjies in a jiggle over this stuff. We always go with the best, most efficient, according to our circumstances, and ignore the “fashonistas”.

We Freepers are the leaders. No matter what platform we choose to use!

Ideas matter more than tools.

Ah, Shineon, you got a perfect picture of the best of the breed.

When they make a dog-sandwich of me at night, they take care to get in just the right position, so as not to disturb my sleep. Then they never move from that position. Seriously!

And, even though I joke about being sandwiched between the two, they always move from our bed when asked, gracefully. My husband never has to move to the couch, but will sometimes complain that they take it when he tells them to move to the floor.

After all, these dogs are smart, and prefer comfort after a hard day of chasing off any and all varmints that might threaten the homestead, the garden, and the livestock.

Crows being the most ubiquitous, Hawks second, and UPS running a close third.

P.S. You can also play World of Warcraft on a newer Mac! It can’t get better than that!

WoW is an abomination of a game, just like everything else Blizzard makes. Better off without it.

Now, Team Fortress 2...

This Eric Blair 2084 is beginning to come across as a clown who enjoys playing stupid to take advantage of our collective good nature and willingness to help for his own jollies.

Please notice that he ignored the good and helpful advice he was given, mine included, and kept asking the same questions.

It was as though he ignored it all. An honest five year old would do better than this phoney.

I'm sorry I didn't catch it sooner.

Bum.

“That’s not a Mac thing, it’s an FR thing. Go to Account (in FR) click on My Preferences, tell it to open in new window.”

It is NOT a FR thing. In Windows you right click on something and select “OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW”.

You don’t need to globally change all tasks to open in a new window.

Now wait just a second here...

The thread has drifted from helping a Mac newbie, to Malinois (my fault) to World of Warcraft, (also my fault)

Now, where should we drift to next?

Is Team Fortress 2.... “Mac compatible”

If not, what is the problem! Aren’t the programmers up to the challenge?

In my ever so humble opinion, any game worth playing is worth being “cross-platform”. I started on Lineage, then went to Everquest, and now play WoW.

But, I get it. To each His/Her own... Enjoy!

Team Fortress 2 is made by Valve Software, founded by former Microsoft employees. They believe heavily in the Windows platform. Steam, their download service, is Windows-only. They use DirectX to program. Nothing about their games is easily portable, nor are they interested in doing so: they're doing just fine without OS X.

There is no such thing as an MMORPG worth playing. Not a one.

Take it back. Seriously. If mac's were so great, as many will try to convince you... why after nearly 20 years do they ONLY have like 6% of the market? MACdonalds would not keep a new sandwich on the menu if after 20 years they only sold 6% as many as burger king sells of the whopper Jr.

Oh, and I was able to open this reply in a separate window with a left click. I didn't need to hold down control and click, or go to the FR preference menu to change my global settings, or get a one off browser that no html code writer except 2nd graders writes web pages for. Just a simple left click and select “Open in a new window”.

We all make mistakes, but none of use know you or will recognize you on the street so no embarrassment will occur because of this one. Take the mistake back to the mac temple for a refund.... or call algore. Even though he couldn't get his to connect to the AOL (until like 10 years after he invented the Internet) I understand he really likes macs. Yeah, al's a mac guy too.

Or just advertise it in the local “green gardener” paper. Those one off folks love nothing more that coming in from a hard day at the peace rally than sitting down with their bong and a mac. In some bizarre way it gives them comfort that at least even a few others are of the same supperior level of conciousness as they are.

Yeah. That's it. Try the "local green gardner" paper. Some “Steve Jobs cool aid tea” drinker will buy it. Lord knows they can't go to just any "common" retailer to get one. So from the way they (macites) talk about mac's you can probably get double what you paid for it.

Eric this is one mistake you can easily recover from and get on with your life with no holding down of a control key or changing your global preferences.

PS. if you are really desperate I saw posted on FR once that you can run windows on some newer macs! Hmmm, they bought a new computer with a "superior" OS and they ran an older copy of windows on it. Now why would anyone want to do that to a new mac?????

Oh well, just search FR under “correcting mistakes with XP” or “saving your sanity with windows” or “Help! I know why the stoned mac girl looked so blown away”.

Not all of life's mistakes need to be permanent.... Good Luck!

/ :-)

@Eric Blair 2084:
Ignore JSteff, he is a rude Windows using bigot. Unfortunately, you are getting an early education in the snobbishness and rudeness of Windows people who have not used an OSX Mac and therefore haven't got a clue about what they are talking about.

There are over 300 Freepers on the Mac Ping list and all of them are willing to help you get a handle on your new computer.

@JSteff:
You are displaying your rudeness and ignorance for everyone to see. You reply is non-responsive and mean spirited.

Eric posted a request for assistance in learning something new. He does not need your blathering recitation of negative myths and insults to Mac users. Go away. Your noise is not helpful.
