A few short weeks ago, W&M quietly launched a bias reporting system and invited students to report anonymously their fellow students for remarks that offend them...

National Review's Corner blog alerted us to this a few days ago. They termed it "East Germany arrives in Virginia" or something along those lines. I really don't know what to say about this other than express a deep shame for my alma mater. I am absolutely furious and trying to collect my thoughts.
I was a witness in a disciplinary case when I attended the college and I can only describe that experience as Kafkaesque. I can only imagine the hell that this "Bias" court will be for students. I can only hope that abuse of the reporting tool can collapse it under its own ridiculousness.
I don't know who is behind this web site, but I wish them well and am glad that they have brought this to national attention. We need to make some noise. Fellow alumni, let's make raise a stink.
Sounds a bit like North Korea.
file a bias complaint against those running the program. file lots of them.
How very ... Orwellian.
One of the first things I learned as a kid, and especially as a student in school, is never rat on another student, no matter what.
That was the unbreakable rule.
I hate to think what this will do to the sense of community at William & Mary. Pretty much what it did in Stalinist Russia, I suppose.
This "bias" crap cuts both ways and I do expect that the system will collapse under the weight of its own absurdity. When I first read of this I thought that it had to be a joke. Part of me still cannot believe that this is an actual college policy and program.
Well . . . scratch another possible college off my daughter’s list. The list of college’s eliminated for nonsense like this is getting pretty long.
To me, this sounds like a back door way for the college to get rid of the Republican student groups on campus. They will always be accused of some sort of hate crime by the loony left. It also reminds me of Hugo Chavez and other tyrants who invent “violations” and “tax avoidance” to nationalize corporate assets.
This kind of sh&t went on in the old USSR.
These are the “Brown Shirts” of Hitler.
Call in every slight against a white person.
ping.
It will collapse. Just wait till the "accused" say to heck with the college judicial system, I'm getting my own lawyer!
That what I did when I was a young college freshman. I got a letter one day from the college saying that I had physically assaulted another (female) student. It was all a bunch of crap, I had never even met the other student, and still haven't to this day 17 years later. The college wanted me to go to a "hearing" at the Judicial Board (J Board), which is essentially a kangaroo court made up of other students.
Well, to hell with that! My dad went to high school with one of the attorneys in town. We retained his services. A few weeks later, the college sent me a letter saying the case was dropped.
Ah. The immortal Dean Wormer, who uttered one of the great lines of the cinema: “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.” Truer words were never spoken.
""Dear Mr. Wagner, I am the parent of 3 high school students and we are starting our college search. Your University was of interest because it fit in with my kids academic qualifications, but I am crossing it off the list due to the recent incident with the Horowitz speech. If you can't control a small crowd during a speech, then I can only wonder how poorly will you control my kid's safety on campus?
In addition, you even had two admininstrators at the event, a vice-provost and a vice president and you still couldn't control the crowd to let the man speak! I've seen the video of the event. I also have to wonder if the seemingly tacit approval (by lack of any crowd control) of the crowd antics towards a conservative speaker will mean that my child will not get a diversified education and will instead get a left-wing indoctrination. If that's the case, then I'll spend my $45,000 a year elsewhere. I don't buy shoddy merchandise.
In those days we settled things the old fashioned way. They came to my room and engaged in a very short dialogue with my roommate, the VSU's Sergeant at Arms, a decidedly unnordic young man from the barrio in East LA.
Then they went away.
No college sponsored star chamber. No anonymous snitching. No self-important "bias team." No suppression of free speech. Just a little dialogue and a much better education in the way the world outside of the insanity that academia has become really works.
Ronaldus, I would be interested in the results of your search. A good college that isn’t crazy is hard to find these days.
Sounds like the perfect description of most professors, except that they are so liberal that they are so drunk with power that they remain stupid.....
