The conservative talk show hosts seem to like Duncan Hunter, but seem to be afraid to “stick their necks out.”
“He dropped out of college in 1969 to join the fight in Vietnam....”
That’s what heroes do!
Hannity is in the tank for Rudy. Hugh Hewit is like a swooning schoolgirl for Mitt Romney. Levin, Laura, Mike Reagan, and maybe even Rush would be open to Hunter.
Unlike the John Kerry style of war heroism that takes him for long enough for a few photo ops and enough time to recomend himself for a few medals.
“Sorry, but my judgment is that as long as Sen. Thompson is in the race, there isnt any space for Mr. Hunter. “
It all depends on how Thompson shakes out with respect to Abraham and illegal invaders. That is a key, hot button issue and if it turns out that Mr. Thompson is as wrist-limped on border issues as Bush II, he will loose.
I agree with you on Rudy McRomney, although I’d hold my nose and vote for Romney if I had to. Giuliani and McCain - never.
Hunter is having a rough time - I’m convinced, because he simply doesn’t have the visibility Romney, McCain and Giuliani have been able to achieve. Also, the fact that he is correctly addressing the erosion of our industrial base and lost American jobs overseas, he is getting large donations from the corporate machers who support people like Bush II and other pro-illegal alien and “free” trade gurus who are ruining America’s Middle Class and industrial base.
The times are gonna get a lot less “rough” for Hunter.
..I’ll tell you one thing, Mr. Madison gives one of the best arguments for the support of a candidate I have ever read...
I agree.
“Hannity is in the tank for Rudy. Hugh Hewit is like a swooning schoolgirl for Mitt Romney. Levin, Laura, Mike Reagan, and maybe even Rush would be open to Hunter.”
I’m disappointed how Hannity has gone so gaga over Rudy, but he does like Hunter, too, and yesterday Sean said that the candidates who did best in the debate were Rudy (gag), Romney (gag), Huckabee and DUNCAN HUNTER!
Sean Hannity mentions Hunter a lot on his show, and he better because Ann Coulter told him to. :)
“Unlike the John Kerry style of war heroism that takes him for long enough for a few photo ops and enough time to recomend himself for a few medals.”
You got it.
And Duncan Hunter repeatedly and modestly says he didn’t do anyting special in ‘Nam but he did. Hunter won a medal, I heard someone call a talk show and say how brave he was when fighting AND:
General Chuck Yeager: “I have known Congressman Duncan Hunter for over 35 years. Duncan served his country in the Army and is a Vietnam vet. In Vietnam, he served in one of the most dangerous outfits - the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 75th Army Rangers.”
The most interesting thing to me is his growing popularity with younger voters. He isn’t trying to pretend to be one of them and I think they appreciate his maturity. The real reason appears to be the message that he’s consistently proposed.
I saw Frank Luntz on the news the other day with a group of voters. When Luntz asked the youngest member of the group (a 22 year old male) what was important to him, the voter ran down a list that fit Hunter to a tee.
I think Ann threatened to beat him up. LOL
Thanks for the post. I may even drop Hunter a $20 in donations.
Thank you Triple E.
..AND as we have posted about before, The Reagan Democrats, which I guess I was until I re-registered...
I hope so.
“It all depends on how Thompson shakes out with respect to Abraham and illegal invaders. That is a key, hot button issue and if it turns out that Mr. Thompson is as wrist-limped on border issues as Bush II, he will loose.”
Well, in that Mr. Thompson opposed Mr. Bush’s legislation, we know at least that he isn’t as limp-wristed on the issue as Mr. Bush. I don’t think that Mr. Thompson’s view on the issue of illegal immigration will satisfy those folks who want to begin immediate deportations of the 12 - 20 million illegal immigrants already here. However, I think that his approach will resonate with most Americans.
In any event, I don’t think that Mr. Abraham’s presence as a liaison to Capitol Hill politicos will be much of an issue, either.
Regarding Rudy McRomney, I won’t vote for either Mr. Giuliani or Mr. Romney. Mr. Giuliani is a liberal, and I think that Mr. Romney may be a fraud. I’d hold my nose and vote for Mr. McCain, but I’d find it a painful vote to make.
I think that Mr. Hunter was having a tough time because, frankly, he isn’t a particularly dynamic candidate, and he didn’t have any built-in name recognition or star-power.
However, I think that his problem now is that the space in which he can run - actual conservative - is being occupied currently by Mr. Thompson. Mr. Thompson’s raison d’etre for running is that he’s an actual Republican, unlike the liberal Mr. Giuliani, a real conservative, unlike the flipped-on-abortion, flipped-on-gun-rights, flipped-on-taxes, etc., Mr. Romney, and is actually sane, as opposed to the lunatic Mr. McCain.
If Mr. Thompson were to leave the field, Mr. Hunter would be the default candidate of those who wish to vote for genuine, sane conservative.
But the fact that he’s spent nearly three decades in Congress laboring under near-anonymity suggests that his candidacy is something of a long-shot.

“I think Ann threatened to beat him up. LOL”
And I think she CAN!
Excellent treatise. However, it overlooks one key factor: cowardice.
Many, if not most, of those who adopt the “he’s great but he can’t win” position have been provided these same arguments repeatedly by members of this forum, but the fundamental lack of stomach for an uphill battle renders all reasoned arguments moot.
Rush is on now - wonder if he’ll mention this today, or this week.
