Dear Antoninus,

Sorry, but my judgment is that as long as Sen. Thompson is in the race, there isn’t any space for Mr. Hunter. Thus, actively supporting Mr. Hunter right now would just take away a little support from a moderate conservative who is a favorite for winning the nomination.

Even if Mr. Thompson were to drop out of the race, I think that it’s a long shot for Mr. Hunter to get the nomination, but at least, he’d have a niche to fill - the actual conservative Republican in the field. And I’d support him, even though it would be uphill.

With Mr. Thompson in the race, it’s nearly impossible for Mr. Hunter to win the nomination. Without Mr. Thompson in the race, it would be difficult, but not nearly impossible.

As Mr. Thompson is an acceptable candidate to me (unlike Rudy McRomney), for now, I’ll be supporting him.

I’d vote for him as vice-president, at least.

Fair enough. To a certain extent, I agree. The only problem is that Fred is not in the race yet. And I have some doubt that he ever will be.

Dear Antoninus,

“Fair enough. To a certain extent, I agree. The only problem is that Fred is not in the race yet. And I have some doubt that he ever will be.”

From my perspective, it appears that Mr. Thompson is clearly running for the nomination. I have very little doubt that he will formally announce sometime after Labor Day. He’s currently raising money at about the rate of the Rudy McRomney bunch, but without the encumbrances or expenses of being a formally-announced candidate.

I know it bugs the heck out of some folks, but in that he’s risen to the top of the polls without announcing, and seems to be holding there, and seems to be raising about $12 million per quarter - and keeping most of it!! - I don’t know why he would be persuaded to announce earlier. Thus, I don't infer from his lack of formal announcement any real hesitation to run on his part.

But, heck, ANY candidate could pull out at any time. I personally think that Mr. McCain won’t make it to the first primary. Who would have thought that a year ago?

So, I certainly entertain the possibility that Mr. Thompson could drop out before he even formally drops in. Doubtful, but possible.

And in that unlikely event, I’d support Mr. Hunter. But I would recognize that where with Mr. Thompson, we’d have a candidate who likely would win the nomination and would have an excellent chance in the general election, conversely, with Mr. Hunter, we’d have a candidate who isn’t a favorite for the nomination, and who would be difficult to elect to the presidency.

Excellent post! I’m voting for Duncan Hunter come hell or high water. I wish everyone could see this article.

In my humble opinion, Hunter’s main problem is the MSM. They pick their favorites and promote them with all kinds of coverage. The average person might never know how strongly he stands out from the pack.

I was never really interested in politics for many years.
No American can afford to be that way anymore. For you long-timers who are well-read on these matters, bear with me as I am still learning.

I am very thankful for this site and others like it that get all of the information out there, not just what they want us to know. If I hadn’t stumbled over here recently, I would have been lost as to who my vote should go to.

I have little faith in the “front-runners”, and do not wish to gamble with our future. Learning who Duncan Hunter is and what he stands for(a loud resounding US!)has helped me so much. I can cast my vote with good conscience and vast hope for our future instead of voting for the lesser of many evils and hoping it will turn out okay. As far as I’m concerned, he’s fighting for us everyday, and that’s enough for me. He doesn’t have to promise to fight for us. His record proves that he does it already. He won’t make fools of us with Dubai, shamnesty and PC appeasement that will only jeopardize us all in the long run. (Not bashing Bush here, just very unhappy with some of the things he’s done. I voted for him twice.)

I’m telling everyone I know. Unfortunately, I don’t know that many people. But all of us Hunterheads tell everyone we know the word will get out, and he will overcome the bias of the MSM and take off. If enough of us start talking about him and supporting him, MSM can’t continue to ignore him. I think some people are hoping if they ignore him he’ll just go away. I think a lot of people might just be afraid of him. He stands for what is right.
Most people, sadly enough, don’t like you if you do that.

I’m just not sure the popularity of Thompson can overcome the fact that he appears to be more of the same old thing we’ve been getting from the GOP.

Since this is addressed to Rush Limbaugh, and he received it, I wonder if he will respond?
