Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM
|
During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."
The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.
In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"
Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman. |

Hey, 5 or 6 years ago I didn’t think that illegal immigration was such a big deal .
I’ll give Fred some slack.
Rudy isn’t for gay marriage either. they both would allow the states to decide on civil unions for themselves.
Rudy is liberal.
Your tactics are slimy.
Hey, fancy meeting you here!
I hope that some day Roe v Wade will be overturned, but until then the law is the law no matter how much it breaks our hearts.
It figures the truth comes out when you get upset enough.
We needed you on the thread where the Rudy supporters were trying to argue that banning the sale of box cutters was the true conservative position because “you wouldn’t like it if you were cut up and bleeding on the subway from a box-cutter attack”.
Weak. Very weak.
The woman ALWAYS makes the decision, even if she has to use a rusty coathanger in a dark, dank back alley.
Give it up. Rudy is a loser to any conservative with principles.
Next you’ll probably tell my principles will loose the election. So be it. I have to live with myself and my conscience.
Or maybe you say if we don’t nominate him Hillary will win. Well, my folks always told me I had to go to bed or the boogey man would get me. Later I found out there was no boogey man, and it was just a scare tactic that worked for a little while. Please don’t stoop to scare tactics. It belittles you and me.
Thank you for sharing your story.
Plus I don’t recall Fred Thompson ever being the keynote speaker at an abortion banquet.
Rudy could not be more pro-abortion unless he performed them with his own hands.
He could use his wife's puppy-stapling-gun.
“Please show me where he said that.”
Sure. I can even show you a video clip of it.
This was from sometime during the time of the senate run. An interview with George Will:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVBtPIrEleM
George Will: “Do you think Roe v Wade was good constitutional law?”
Rudy Giuliani: “Yes I believe, I believe it is.”
Now if you think sometime around 2000 is too long ago, I can also point you to a video clip where he says, when asked about abortion “My view of the constitution is that you have to leave that ultimate choice to the person”. Meaning, he thinks there really is a right to an abortion in the constitution.
He said that one on March 30th. Of this year. (KUTV interview in Salt Lake City UT)
Compare this to Fred Thompson, who believes there is no such right, and therefore the issue of abortion goes back to the states.
They should post a politicians past statements and policies. Its the surest indicator of their future policies.
ROTFLMAO!
Does that work for Romney too?
“I hope that some day Roe v Wade will be overturned, but until then the law is the law no matter how much it breaks our hearts.”
The real issue WRT to presidential race is that rudy believes the “right” to an abortion exists in the constitution, so the possibility of him appointing any judges that disagree with that view is around zero.
Neither have Hillary's.
What is Freds excuse?
Thompson does not need an excuse for being a consistent pro-life vote in the Senate.
Perhaps you should read the homepage.
It says nothing about supporting abortion, homosexual rights, and gun control, like Rudy does.
You're in a classic stage of denial. Witness your manic behavior, calling Thompson supporters "freaking out." The next step is lashing out at FReepers in anger. Then you'll tell your story on DU.
The difference is that while in the senate, Thompson had a solid pro-life voting record. He didn’t just “change” yesterday. Every time it counted he came down on the pro life side, which why he was endorsed by a pro life group.
