Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM

During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."

The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"

Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.

The republican party has to be more ‘moderate’ you see. All and to do that, we have to run the biggest liberal we can find that has an R next to his name.

Arlen specter is probably kicking himself right now for not running for president.

The problem is they can’t have it both ways: letting the woman decide makes Rudy a “babykiller”, but when Fred Thompson has the same position, it’s ignored and they attack the messenger.

They lose any credibility to pretend they care about the issues.

“We need to concentrate on what brings us together and not what divides us,” Thompson said in an interview with The Tennessean published Tuesday. Thompson said he opposes making early-term abortions a crime, as some Republicans would like to do with a constitutional amendment. “

The fear of Fred is growing, but this post is excellent only insofar as it illustrates liberal flopsweats about a Fred candidacy.

I’m just as concerned about whatever Fred said YEARS ago as I am with what Guiliani or any of the candidates said YEARS ago.

People act as though past comments are deal breakers and they’re not. It’s become laughable with all sides searching for decade’s old articles.

I’m getting slammed here for posting from American Spectator...

Lie.

You're getting slammed for posting fake skeletons (your assessment) in support of your pro-abortion, gun-grabbing candidate Rudy.

Bush violated his conservative principles and the result was he could not motivate his base in ‘92. Bob Dole could not motivate the conservative base in ‘96. GWB just barely gained enough support against Gore in 2000 and it took a considerable grassroots effort to finally get him seated.

Without the motivated grassroots in ‘04, Kerry would probably be president today.

And due to a perceived lack of conservative principles in the Republican Party in ‘06, our side was not motivated and now we’re stuck in our current situation.

You’ve got to give the people something to get the juices flowing. Sorry, Rudy’s a great guy and he’ll get half of our side going, or maybe even three quarters, but it’s going to take an all out effort.

Why hobble our side with a candidate who is sorely lacking on basic conservative issues? He’s not going to motivate the conservative right. Don’t repeat the mistakes noted above. Violating the most basic conservative principles is a sure way to lose the election.

I stated that almost any decent, honest conservative Republican should win against Hillary, but he must be able to motivate his base to do it. Sadly, the social liberal Rudy Giuliani may be the one Republican of the top half dozen or so front runners who might fail to motivate the grassroots and therefore may actually cause a repeat of ‘92 and we say hello again to a President Clinton.
Do not repeat the now obvious mistakes made in ‘92, ‘96 and ‘06 and barely avoided in ‘00 and ‘04. Be sure the candidate we choose actually walks and talks the conservative platform!

Motivate the base. Win elections!

Fred Thompson is off limits to everyone who supports someone else

Be fair and objective, that's all we're asking. There's no need to distort Thompson's record. We're FReepers, remember? We can sniff out spin.

No, No, No. It’s excellent on its face. The truth won’t hurt Fred at all. Nobody but news junkies and supporters of others will care what a candidate said YEARS ago and that applies to Guiliani as well.

They are terrified indeed. And they haven’t managed to tear him down at all. If anything he is stronger as he moves to the day he announces.

And when he announces, these con artists are going to get steamrolled.

Every single time the abortion issue has come before Romney, he sided with life as well. Vetoing bills on embryo farming, embryo cloning, somatic-cell nuclear transfer, emergency contraception, a re-definition of life. Opposing efforts to lower the age of consent, promoting abstinence education. Call this pandering if you like, but Romney’s actions on life, in the bluest state in America, are heckuva alot more significant then generic, on the margin, pro-life votes that come before the senate.

There's no need to distort Thompson's record.

Sure there is. She obviously feels it's her best chance of smearing a pro-life pro-gun candidate.

That my FRiend, is not an answer to my question:)

Do not expect to make sweeping statements about the skeletons in Fred’s closet without being called on it..

Fred ALSO said in that statement “No public financing”. Unequivocal. I believe the candidate you’re supporting made a statement contrary to that idea, just this week.

It’s done by supporters of others as well. It’s a “let me top your old post with this one” gotcha.

Silly, silly.

How is quoting FT verbatim “distorting his record?”.

The article a51 posted was quoting FT.

“In the interview, Thompson was asked: “Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?”

Thompson answered: “Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.”

1994 is not 2007, Fred Thompson has been pro-life for a long time and that is enough to admire him.
