Rudy (Giuliani) On Judges
Captain's Quarters ^ | February 03, 2007

Given the more liberal tendencies of Rudy Giuliani on abortion and guns, conservatives have expressed serious misgivings about his run for the nomination. However, the main effect that a President can have on these issues involves his or her outlook on the judiciary. The federal court system has been the main battleground for both issues, with Roe specifically precluding any kind of legislative action. Court nominations have become one of the essential considerations for presidential contenders -- and it may be more important for Giuliani than any other Republican candidate.

Giuliani has hinted that he would nominate jurists in the mold of Antonin Scalia and John Roberts. Today, at a visit with the South Carolina GOP Executive Committee, an audience member pressed him for his position. His campaign office has supplied us with the transcript of his answer:

On the Federal judiciary I would want judges who are strict constructionists because I am. I'm a lawyer. I've argued cases in the Supreme Court. I've argued cases in the Court of Appeals in different parts of the country. I have a very, very strong view that for this country to work, for our freedoms to be protected, judges have to interpret not invent the Constitution. Otherwise you end up, when judges invent the constitution, with your liberties being hurt. Because legislatures get to make those decisions and the legislature in South Carolina might make that decision one way and the legislature in California a different one. And that's part of our freedom and when that's taken away from you that's terrible.

It sounds as if Rudy has what could be an unbeatable combination. His personal views trend to the center and perhaps even liberal on these issues -- but he wants to nominate jurists that will return these questions to the...

More non response. Is your boy that hard to defend? The speech is on the NYC official website. It happened. He then took their money? Are you embracing abortion?

Rudy Guiliani has marched in lockstep with liberals on affirmative action, gay rights, gay marriage, gun control, school prayer, tuition tax credits, liberal immigration policies, and he's reinforced it, time and time again. Just about everytime Rudy opens his mouth, offensive liberal words come pouring out. As Mayor, Rudy put liberals in high-paid city jobs, an indication what a Rudy WH would look like. Here then is Rudy in his own words:

--The New York State Liberal Party on its endorsement of Rudy Giuliani for Mayor: "When the Liberal Party Policy Committee reviewed a list of key social issues of deep concern to progressive New Yorkers, we found that Rudy Giuliani agreed with the Liberal Party's stance on a majority of such issues. He agreed with the Liberal Party's views on affirmative action, gay rights, gun control, school prayer and tuition tax credits. As Mayor, Rudy Giuliani would uphold the Constitutional and legal rights to abortion." N.Y.S. Liberal Party Endorsement Statement of Candidate Giuliani for Mayor of New York City April 8, 1989

--On the Republican Party: "Mr. Rockefeller represented 'a tradition in the Republican Party' I've worked hard to re-kindle - the Rockefeller, Javits, Lefkowitz tradition." Rudy Giuliani told the New York Times July 9, 1992

--Village Voice Interview with Guiliani: He was asked: "What kind of Republican Is [Giuliani]? A Reagan Republican?" Giuliani pauses before answering: "I'm a Republican." Village Voice January 24, 1989

--On Attending 1996 Republican Convention: Rudy expressed his pleasure when he wasn't invited to the Republican National Convention in San Diego. "If I take three or four days off from city business, I want to do it for a substantive purpose. It didn't seem to me any substantive purpose could be served by going to the Republican convention." said Rudy. Rudy! An Investigative Biography of Rudolph Giuliani, Page 459, by Wayne Barrett

--On Barry Goldwater: Giuliani described John Kennedy as "great and brilliant. Barry Goldwater as an "incompetent, confused and sometimes idiotic man." New York Daily News, May 13, 1997

--On President Bill Clinton: Shortly before his last-minute endorsement of Bob Dole in the 1996 presidential election, Giuliani told the Post's Jack Newfield that "most of Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine." Rudy! An Investigative Biography of Rudolph Giuliani, Wayne Barrett.

--The Daily News quoted Giuliani as saying March 1996: "Whether you talk about President Clinon, Senator Dole.... The country would be in very good hands in the hands of any of that group." An Investigative Biography of Rudolph Giuliani, Wayne Barrett.

BTW, your frantic spamming and other desparate measures are not going to keep Rudy from WINNING.

He's well on his way. Harrah! Enjoy it!

Did you see Rudy on Hannity the other night?

Hannity is rabidly anti-abortion. Hannity supports Rudy to the max.

Rudy says abortion is awful, he hates it.

You keep hiding from that thread, why?

FYI, someone told me the other day it was against FR rules to carry arguments across threads.

Just thought you'd want to know.

Your embrace of Sangerite Rudy and abortion won't help him, or America. OTOH when the 75% of the GOP that has NOT seen the truth about Rudy learns about his record, he loses. Then what do you do?

BTW, when will you have the moral and intellectual courage to comment on the NARAL speech?

Indeed. Since this isn't an argument, rather trying to get a comment from a Rudy supporter on an official Rudy speech, I don't see your point.

Rudy says abortion is awful, he hates it.
Square that with his NARAL speech. Go ahead.

Don't worry, my friend. There will come a time when the Liberals will eat crow. They'll be stuck with someone more Conservative than Rudy (which means just about anyone), and they will see their dreams of a Liberal GOP go down the tubes. I can't imagine the mass Rudophile suicides ("man, we were THIS close to making the GOP Pro-Choice and getting rid of those damn NRA types....")

Either he loses the nomination or he loses the General - he can't win outside of NYC. He couldn't beat Hitlery for a Senate seat, and he won't beat her for the Presidency.

So that makes it OK to trample the rights of law-abiding citizens? That makes it OK to sue a third party for the actions of criminals?

Is that what passes for conservatism in the big city?

Yes. You claim that Rudy 'hates' abortion. I invite you (again) to his NARAL speech and ask that you explain it. How is that "crossthread"?

narses you're upset. But not as upset as you're going to be when Rudy wins. ;-)

Your circular arguments are getting as tiring as your unrelenting spam.
