WASHINGTON Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. (R-Va.) on Thursday stood by his demand for strict immigration controls that he said would prevent Muslims from being elected to Congress and using the Koran during swearing-in ceremonies. So the man is entitled to his own opinion. I don't hear the mainstream media screaming about CAIR Chairman Omar M. Ahmad telling a crowd of California Muslims in July 1998,Islamic groups in the United States called on Republicans to repudiate Goode's remarks, which he first made in a letter attacking the use of the holy book in a ceremonial oath-taking next month by the first Muslim elected to the House.
"I do not apologize, and I do not retract my letter," Goode said emphatically during a session Thursday with reporters in the southern Virginia town of Rocky Mount.
Questioned later on Fox News Channel's "Your World," he said, "I am for restricting immigration so that we don't have a majority of Muslims elected to the House of Representatives."
The incoming House member at the center of the controversy, Keith Ellison, told CNN's "The Situation Room" on Thursday that he could trace his ancestors to Louisiana as far back as 1742. "I'm about as American as they come," said Ellison, who converted to Islam in college.
The Minnesota Democrat said he planned to use the Koran only as part of an unofficial individual swearing-in before friends and supporters. That event will follow the official ceremony in which all House members raise their right hands and pledge their allegiance to the Constitution and the laws of the United States, without resting their left hands on anything.
Goode said Thursday that he wrote the letter in response to constituents who e-mailed him about Ellison's decision to use the Koran. In the letter, he said his own ceremony would be different.
When I raise my hand to take the oath on swearing-in day, I will have the Bible in my other hand," Goode wrote. "I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way ."
I fear," he wrote, "that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America."
"Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Koran . . . should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth."Does anyone really think the agenda has changed since 1998? Did 9/11 create a change of heart in American Muslims "religious sensitivities"?
Ask a Muslim if the Koran has changed and you will have an answer.
As for my opinion--
I signed Jihadi Du Jour up for a certain advertiser and it was rejected for promoting and supporting intolerance. I replied to the rejection e-mail with, "Whose intolerance? Mine or the Jihadists?". I guess some won't realise where they are until they are under Sharia.
See my response to post #11, immediately preceding your post.
The Muslims tout the fact that they are our enemies, I see it every night on T.V. People like you won't understand this until one day you wake up & some nutcase has set off a nuke here. You want to call us racists when these people want to kill us because of our Religion, now who's the racist?
Please be more specific about which "they" your post mentions. You don't mean Keith Ellison, do you? If you are referring to American citizens, please name all of them so there is some way for a person of my limited intelligence to understand your mutterings.
Which Muslims? You don't mean Keith Ellison, do you?
Mr. Ellison is a patriotic American citizen, just like you and me. If a no-good bigot like Virgil Goode questioned your patriotism you would want me to stick up for you just like I am standing up against Mr. Goode's bullying here on FR, would you not?
You are aware of the 20+ prisoners at Guantanamo Bay who committed suicide after being captured by American forces in the Middle East, aren't you? None of the ones who committed suicide were convicted of any crime. They didn't even have a quasi-judicial hearing to determine they were enemy combatants as alleged by the Bush Administration.
Suppose one of those 20+ young men escaped after a few months of Guantanamo Bay torture. You wouldn't be surprised if they committed terrorist acts in Cuba or in the U.S. would you?
I have a simple sollution to all this "Are American Muslims moderates or not?" debates.
Let all the Muslim organizations and Mosques in America open up their financial records to the govt, which should have been done after 911 anyways. Let's see where the money's coming from and where it's going. This is obviously not an end-all sollution, but it would at least solve the problem of financial connections. Any institution financially connected to any terrorist organization or govt. could then be classified as an enemy combatant. This will probably happen in some way after the next attack anyway, and the govt. already acknowledges the existence of sleeper cells. Why wait?
Why discriminate against the Muslims when Christians have performed terrorist acts in the U.S. too? Think of the people who bombed abortion clinics with loss of lives. What makes those christofascists any better than Muslims?
Your argument appears to lack consistency. If Muslims and mosques are subject to laws proscribing terrorism, why not apply those laws equally to Christians and churches?
Mr. Ellison is openly Muslim and until recently (last 5 yrs) I had no reason to dislike them. But when you hear or read what these people are preaching how can you take up for him or them. I mean if said I'm a Patriotic American that belongs to the KKK, you would scream at the top of your lungs that I'm a racist. But this guy say's hey i'm a Patriotic American so you'll have to overlook the fact that his/their religion calls for the killing or conversion of Infidels, does it not? Just for the record the Infidels they're talking about is us.
Oyvey. Keith Ellison is a Farrakhan acolyte who supports every copkiller with a Muslim sounding name.
Suppose one of those 20+ young men escaped after a few months of Guantanamo Bay torture. You wouldn't be surprised if they committed terrorist acts in Cuba or in the U.S. would you?
First, It is common knowledge that some of these "suicides" were staged to perpetuate "abuse and torture" rumors about the military at Gitmo.
Second, there are more living detainees than dead. No one forces a suicide...except Allah.
Third, I'm sure there are 20+ Muslims angry about Gitmo already in this country...no I'm surprised an attack hasn't already happened, frankly.
muslims.
Yes, and I would do the same to Keith Ellison if he screamed racist BS at the top of his lungs the same way that Virgil Goode does. But Mr. Ellison doesn't.
But this guy say's hey i'm a Patriotic American so you'll have to overlook the fact that his/their religion calls for the killing or conversion of Infidels, does it not?
You agree that Mr. Ellison is a patriot, don't you? If not please point out what facts I overlooked.
If others in his religion are killers or call the rest of us infidels, I blame those others, not Mr. Ellison.
"Your argument appears to lack consistency. If Muslims and mosques are subject to laws proscribing terrorism, why not apply those laws equally to Christians and churches?"
If you're so naive to think that "Christian terrorism" poses the same qualitative threat as Islamic terrorism, there's not much more I can say.
I'm all for restricting immigration, but Goode's incoherent blather undermines the cause by making us look like idiots.
Maybe Mr. Goode has noted what has happened in other countries with growing Muslim populations.
